Vassar Drops Conference Opener At #10/7 RIT

Tinker nets four goals, Holt wins 17 face-offs

Rochester, NY – The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team opened Liberty League play Saturday afternoon with a 21-9 loss at #10/7 RIT. Sophomore Tate Tinker (Lexington, KY) scored four times for the Brewers and First Year Danny Holt (Rochester, MI) won 17 face-offs.
 
Vassar drops back to the .500 mark overall at 4-4 and opens conference play at 0-1. RIT improves its standing to 8-2 and is 1-0 against league rivals.
 
How It Happened
  • The Tigers ran out to a 5-0 lead 7:15 into the contest, getting the opening goal from David Charney just 50 seconds into the tilt.
  • Vassar got on the board at the 6:23 mark of the opening period when Tinker potted his first goal of the game off a feed from Beckett Wolf (Park City, UT).
  • The two sides would split the next four scores, with Vassar getting markers from Tinker and Travis Heller (Lafayette, NJ), to head to the second frame with RIT holding a 7-3 advantage.
  • Tinker and Drew Mazzocco (Leesburg, VA) scored back-to-back goals early in the second quarter to pull Vassar to within 9-5.
  • RIT closed the second frame on a 4-1 run, getting a pair of goals from Tyson Allison, to carry a 13-6 lead into the intermission.
  • RIT held a 28-11 advantage in shots before the break while face-offs were even at halftime 10-10.
  • Vassar was held off the board in the third frame and RIT built a 17-6 lead heading to the final period after outscoring the Brewers 4-0.
  • Tinker scored his fourth goal of the game to open the fourth quarter scoring, before RIT ran off the next three goals to open a 20-7 advantage.
  • Heller and Anderson Eads (Brightwaters, NY) struck 44 seconds apart to make the score 20-9 ahead of a Russell Bolinger tally for RIT that closed out the scoring in the game with just under three minutes left.
  • Second half shots were even at 22-22 with Vassar holding a slim 7-6 edge in face-offs after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • With four goals on Saturday, Tinker stands second on the team in markers with 19 and third on the team with 23 points.
  • Eads pushed his team lead in goals to 23 and points to 33 after scoring twice and helping on two other goals against the Tigers.
  • Mazzocco finished a three-point day with a goal and two helpers for the Brewers.
  • Heller tallied twice in the contest and stands third on the team with 14 goals.
  • Eads, Kai Cohagan (Austin, TX), Aiden Santoro (Water Mill, NY) and Ari Krane (Atherton, CA) each caused two turnovers apiece for the Brewers.
  • Holt finished the day 17-for-27 in face-offs and paced the Brewers with nine groundballs.
  • Dan Bader (Forestdale, MA) and Hayden Sofield (Long Beach, NY) each caused a turnover and picked up three groundballs.
  • Jess Geoghagan (Mercer Island, WA) made nine saves in goal for Vassar and secured a trio of groundballs.
 
For The Tigers
  • Allison and Ethan Harkins each finished with five points with Allison scoring four times and Harkins recording a hat trick and two assists.
  • Charney scored three times and added a helper for the Tigers.
  • Ryan Sanders and Brayden Kuczma both scored twice and helped on two goals.
  • Erich Acton posted four points on the strength of a goal and three assists.
  • Logan Fletcher forced two turnovers and secured three groundballs.
  • Joe Holenstein caused a pair of miscues and collected five groundballs.
  • Philip Minardo won 12 face-offs and led the team with eight groundballs.
  • Alex Zborowski earned the win in goal with six saves in just over 44 minutes of work.
  • Chase Strychaluk came on to stop four shots in just under 16 minutes of play.
