Baseball Drops First Game of Series to RPI

Brewers head to Troy for the final two games of the conference series

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team opened its home and conference slate on Friday afternoon as the Brewers fell 9-5 to RPI in the first of a three game Liberty League series. Vassar's record drops to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Engineers improve to 7-6 on the season and 1-0 in Liberty League action.

How It Happened
  • Vassar struck first in the bottom of the first following a triple from senior Jensen Bergman and first year Jack Johnson drove him in on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
  • The Brewers added a run in the second on a RBI groundout from first year Eric Wallick to plate classmate Jack Biskupiak.
  • RPI evened the score in third on a two-run homer from Alex Coombes.
  • The Engineers pulled ahead in the fifth on a solo homer from Coombes and expanded the lead to 4-2 in the sixth on a steal of third from Walker Abdallah and a throwing error.
  • VC cut the lead down to 4-3 on a sacrifice fly from first year Kieran McGrath to score fellow first year Ethan Fox-Fernandez.
  • RPI expanded the lead to 7-3 in the eighth on a sac fly from Ben Belliss and a RBI triple from Charlie Morse.
  • The Engineers tacked on two runs in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Abdallah and a double steal from Michael Lebenson and Coombes to go ahead 9-3.
  • Vassar put up two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Johnson doubled home first year Noah Townsend and Biskupiak knocked in Johnson to bring the Brewers within 9-5.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman registered a 2-for-3 day with a run scored and two walks while Townsend and first year Nick Kreatsoulas each posted two hits.
  • Johnson drove in two runs and added a hit along with Biskupiak registering a run batted in and a hit.
  • Fox-Fernandez finished with a hit and a run scored while first year Aidan Annello also registered a hit.
  • Junior Grant Maryott took the loss on the mound as he went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned), six walks and struck out three.
For The Engineers
  • Lebenson garnered a 3-for-4 day with three runs scored while Coombes blasted two homers and scored three runs and knocked in three runs.
  • Belliss and Morse each tallied two hits while Jack Mullins and Matt Chotiner both recorded a hit.
  • Garret Gates earned the win as he tossed 5.1 innings, giving up six hits, three runs (two earned), two walks and struck out two.
  • Andrew Gaughan and Sam Ferrier combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

  • The two teams will square off in the final two games of the series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. in Troy.
