Brewers Tripped Up By Thoroughbreds

Regan matches career-high with 21 points

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) matched her career-high with 21 points, but it was not enough Tuesday evening as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team suffered a 59-55 home loss to Skidmore.
 
Tuesday's defeat stops a seven-game winning streak against Skidmore and drops Vassar to 9-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play. Skidmore improves to 8-11 overall and 6-6 against league rivals.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar shot a blistering 69.2-percent from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, but could only pull in front 19-17 after the first quarter.
  • Neither side would lead by more than three points in the first quarter and after a Sara Hastie bucket put Skidmore in front 17-15, Vassar got conversions from Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) and Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) to carry the two-point lead into the second frame.
  • The Brewers cooled to 38.9-percent shooting in the second quarter and saw Skidmore outscore them 21-14 heading into halftime.
  • After the Brewers opened a 21-17 lead early in the second frame, the two teams would trade the lead nine times over the remainder of the quarter.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored the final six points of the period, including a Claudia Schneider conversion in the closing seconds, to race into the intermission with a 38-33 lead.
  • Vassar shot 51.6-percent over the opening 20 minutes, but went just 1-for-6 from three-point range.
  • Skidmore shot 53.3-percent in the first half and knocked down two of its three attempts from behind the arc.
  • Shoulders led all players at the break with 10 points.
  • The Thoroughbreds pushed their lead to double-figures when an Audrey Bowen bucket at the 4:03 mark of the third quarter moved them in front 50-40.
  • Vassar answered with a 7-0 run to close the quarter, sparked by a Regan three-pointer, to pull to with 50-47 heading into the final stanza.
  • Vassar pulled to within a single point, at 54-53, on an Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) bucket with 4:21 left in the game, but would manage just two points the rest of the way.
  • Madison Meyer quickly gave Skidmore back a three-point lead with a jumper on the ensuing possession ahead of a Sophia Martinez bucket that gave the visitors a 58-53 lead with 3:44 left to play.
  • Regan converted a jumper with 2:44 left, getting Vassar to within three points, but it would mark the Brewers final scoring of the contest.
  • The Brewers cooled to 32-percent shooting after halftime and finished the second half 2-for-6 from three-point range.
  • Skidmore was held to 31-percent shooting in the second half and went without a three-pointer.
 
For The Brewers
  • Regan equaled her career-high of 21 points after going 9-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Regan led the team with eight rebounds and closed the night with two assists and four steals.
  • Shoulders contributed 13 points on the strength of 5-for-8 shooting and totaled four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
  • Ware chipped in eight points, three rebounds and a trio of blocked shots.
  • Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) scored six points and added two assists, a block and a steal. '
  • Lovett tallied five points, hauled in four rebounds and helped on a pair of buckets.
 
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Meyer led Skidmore in scoring with 14 points and led all players with six steals.
  • Martinez finished the win with 10 points, two assists and a pair of steals.
  • Hastie came off the bench to score 10 points and post three assists and three steals.
  • Bowen led the team with six rebounds and produced seven points.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the night shooting 42.9-percent overall and went 3-for-12 from behind the arc.
  • Skidmore converted at 42.4-percent and finished 2-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Skidmore held the advantage in points off of turnovers, 20-13, and second chance points, 9-4.
  • Points in the paint were even at 36-36.

  • Vassar continues conference play on Friday with a trip to Bard.
  • Skidmore heads to Union on Friday.
