Late Rally Sends Vassar Past Hartford, 12-10

Brewers score three times in final 4:46

Poughkeepsie, NY – Siena Wong (Scotts Valley, CA) and Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) scored 26 seconds apart late in the fourth quarter to help Vassar overcome a one-goal deficit and earn a come-from-behind 12-10 non-conference win over Hartford Saturday afternoon. Billings led seven different players with at least one point with five in the contest.
 
Vassar improves to 2-0 with the victory while the Hawks start their season at 0-1.
 
How It Happened
  • The Brewers opened strong on Saturday, scoring thee of the first four goals of the game.
  • Maddie Kaltsas (Minnetrista, MN) and Billings scored a minute apart and Wong added a goal at the 10:10 mark of the first quarter to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.
  • Vassar maintained the lead until three straight tallies from Hartford, all with the player advantage, pushed the Hawks in front 5-4 just over a minute into the second period.
  • Billings knotted the score at 5-5 with a player-down goal at the 12:59 mark of the quarter with what proved to be the Brewers' final score of the first half.
  • Lauren Samela finally broke the tie with 2:21 left before halftime to send the Hawks into the break with a slim 6-5 advantage.
  • Vassar closed the first half with an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in draw controls.
  • The two sides would split six goals in the third period, with Hartford grabbing a 9-7 lead following goals from Talei Ricketson and Samela just 39 seconds part.
  • The Brewers pulled to within a goal heading to the final frame when Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) finished off a pass from Wong with 2:46 left in the third quarter.
  • Billings opened the fourth quarter scoring just 40 seconds into the frame to being Vassar even at 9-9.
  • Samela answered with her sixth goal of the game with 11:36 left to give the Hawks a 10-9 lead.
  • Hartford maintained the advantage until the 4:46 mark when Wong evened the score after finishing off a feed from Billings.
  • Just 26 seconds later Billings netted the game winning goal ahead of an insurance tally from Sigrid Fredlund (Seattle, WA) with just under three minutes left to play.
  • Vassar outshot Hartford 17-8 after halftime and posted a 7-4 advantage in draw controls.
 
For The Brewers
  • Billings led the scoring attack with four goals, including the game winner, and an assist. Billings added three draw controls and a pair of groundballs in the victory.
  • Wong totaled three points on the strength of two goals and an assist, adding a groundball and a trio of draws.
  • Fredlund and Kaltsas each scored twice with Kaltsas adding six draw controls.
  • Karina Gyllenhaal (Beverley, MA) posted a goal and two assists and Burgess finished with a goal and a helper.
  • Liz Lange (Upton, MA) and Emily Kallman (Jamestown, RI) each forced two turnovers with Lange collecting four groundballs.
  • Maddie Busam (Summit, NJ) stopped three shots in the first half.
  • Cassidy Schuchat (Hopewell Junction, NY) earned the win in goal with one second half save.
 
For The Hawks
  • Samela led all players with six goals in the game and finished with three draw controls.
  • Sara Costa scored twice, caused two turnovers and won a pair of draws.
  • Laurel McIntosh and Ricketson each posted a goal and an assist.
  • Mandi Rivard made 10 saves in goal and led the team with three groundballs.
