Brewers Top Ithaca, Sweep Final Weekend Of Regular Season

Ware nets 12 points in regular season finale

Ithaca, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team finished off the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 50-43 road win at Ithaca. First Year Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) led the offense against the Bombers with a game-high 12 points.
 
Vassar concludes the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and wrapped up the fifth-seed in the Liberty League Championship with an 11-7 mark against conference rivals. Ithaca sees its season come to an end at 9-17 overall and 6-12 in league play.
 
How It Happened
  • Neither team would score for nearly the first four minutes of Saturday's tilt, before Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) gave Vassar a 2-0 lead 3:48 into the contest.
  • Vassar spread its first quarter lead to 6-2 on a McDermed free-throw and would hold onto the advantage until a Mary Bernat bucket gave Ithaca a 7-6 lead with 3:13 left in the first period.
  • After the two teams traded the lead, Ithaca got back-to-back buckets ahead of an Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) layup to carry a slim 11-10 advantage into the second stanza.
  • A Zoraida Icabalceta three-pointer early in the second frame gave Ithaca a 14-10 advantage.
  • Vassar would pull even in the game twice before regaining a 19-18 lead on a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) bucket with just under two minutes left before halftime.
  • The Regan conversion was part of a 7-1 run to close the half that saw Vassar carry a 24-19 lead into the intermission.
  • Vassar shot 40.9-percent prior to halftime and went 2-for-4 from three-point range.
  • Ithaca was held to 33.3-percent shooting in the first half and was 3-for-8 from behind the arc.
  • The Brewers spread their lead to 27-19 on a Regan bucket early in the third period and maintained the lead throughout the stanza.
  • A Natalie Tucker three-pointer cut the Vassar advantage to 33-31, but a Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) bucket and a free-throw from Lovett helped get Vassar through the third stanza leading 36-33.
  • Ware gave Vassar a game-high 42-33 lead early in the fourth quarter and the Brewers withstood a late Ithaca charge to hold on for the victory.
  • Ithaca would get to within a single point twice in the final three minutes, before Vassar pulled away for the win on a Ware basket and a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line.
  • Vassar went without a three-pointer in the second half and converted at 36.4-percent overall.
  • Ithaca 37-percent after halftime and finished 1-for-9 from three-point range.
 
For The Brewers
  • Ware was the lone Brewer to score in double-figures, reaching 12 points on the strength of a 6-for-8 effort from the free-throw line. Ware added a team-high seven rebounds and a pair of blocks to the winning effort.
  • McDermed contributed nine points, three assists and to steals to the victory.
  • Regan paced the Brewers with four assists and chipped in six points.
  • Shoulders scored eight points and secured six rebounds.
  • Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) swiped four steals to lead Vassar.
 
For Ithaca
  • Madison Gill scored a team-high 10 points off the bench for the Bombers.
  • Icabalceta totaled nine points, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
  • Tori Drevna scored seven points and handed out three assists.
  • Avery McPeek led the Bombers with seven rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot. 38.6-percent overall in the game and finished 2-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Ithaca was held to 35.4-percent shooting and a 4-for-17 effort from behind the arc.
  • Vassar outscored Ithaca 14-5 from the free-throw line.
  • The Brewers outscored Ithaca in the paint 24-16.
