Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Men's Volleyball team rebounded with two home victories on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers defeated Kean 25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20 before sweeping Arcadia 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 in the nightcap.
Vassar improves to 6-6 overall on the season while the Cougars moved to 10-5 overall and the Knights drop to 6-7.
Vassar 3 Kean 1
First Set
- Following a Chris Mitchell kill to go ahead 4-2, Vassar answered with a kill from junior Armaan Desai, an ace from sophomore Petar Miocinovic and a block from Desai, junior Walter Birnbaum and junior Parker Schoenl to take a 5-4 lead.
- The lead grew to 11-8 on two kills each from sophomore Henry Bonney and Birnbaum.
- Aiden Flinn's kill cut the deficit to 11-10 before VC rattled off seven of the next eight points, led by three Desai winners and two blocks from Desai and Birnbaum.
- Vassar used blocks from junior Enzo Bertini, Birnbaum, Bonney and senior James Zuckerman to close the first set victory.
Second Set
- Kean took a 5-3 lead following two kills from Caden Krzyzak and two solo blocks from Mitchell.
- Vassar battled back to go ahead 12-9Â behind four kills from Bonney and a winner each from Birnbaum, Miocinovic and Zuckerman.
- The Cougars regained the lead at 15-14 on two Flinn winners and a kill each from Murphy and Mitchell.
- The Brewers answered with two kills from Birnbaum and a winner apiece from Bertini and Zuckerman to pull ahead 18-16.
- Kean evened the set at 18 on a block from David Flores and Krzyzak and then scored five straight points to go ahead 24-20 on a Murphy kill.
- Mitchell's kill propelled the Cougars to a second set victory.
Third Set
- VC scored a 5-3 lead to open the third set as Desai and Birnbaum both buried a kill each along with Desai, Miocinovic and Schoenl combining for two blocks.
- The Brewers lead grew to 10-15 on a kill each from Miocinovic and Bonney and blocks from Zuckerman, Miocinovic, Bonney and Desai.
- VC added to its lead to go ahead 14-6 on a Desai kill before a block from Krzyzak and Mitchell reduced the deficit to five.
- Zuckerman, Miocinovic and first year Carroll Jenkins helped the lead grow to 20-15 until kills from Murphy and Mitchell brought the Cougars within 20-18.
- VC used two winners from Birnbaum and one from Desai to fend off the late Kean charge.
Fourth Set
- VC raced out to a 8-4 lead as two kills each from Bonney and Birnbaum along with a block from sophomore Stuart Dow and Schoenl and a solo block from Desai.
- Kean cut the deficit to 12-9 on back-to-back kills from Krzyzak and Mitchell before the Vassar lead expanded to 17-11 on two kills from Bonney and a winner each from Birnbaum and Schoenl.
- The Cougars got back within three at 18-15 until the trio of Bonney, Birnbaum and Desai buried kills to push the advantage to 21-16.
- Zach Marcheschi's ace reduced the lead to 23-19 but a block from Desai and Birnbaum and a set-clinching kill from Birnbaum gave the Brewers the four-set victory.
For The Brewers
- Birnbaum tallied a match-high 18 kills (.395), six blocks and 11 digs while Bonney posted 16 kills (.538), two blocks and six digs.
- Desai garnered 13 kills (.522) and a career-high matching 10 blocks along with Miocinovic recording seven winners, two blocks and nine digs.
- Zuckerman added three kills, five blocks and four digs and Schoenl finished with 39 assists, a career-high seven blocks and nine digs.
- Senior Casey McMenamin lifted nine digs.
For The Cougars
- Mitchell registered a team-high 16 kills, four blocks and five digs while Flinn posted nine kills, three blocks and five digs.
- Danny Pugliano secured nine winners while Krzyzak totaled seven kills and five blocks.
- Murphy finished with six kills and nine digs and Flores garnered 42 assists and 10 digs.
- Tyler Quinn lifted a match-high 13 digs.

First Set
- Vassar held a 5-3 lead to begin the set on winners from Birnbaum and Miocinovic.
- Arcadia pulled in front 6-5 on a kill from Reece Dodd until two kills from Jenkins and a winner each from first year Mason Cochran and McMenamin pushed the Brewers ahead 9-7.
- A big run from VC, led by two Miocinovic kills and a winner each from Birnbaum and Bertini, grew the lead to 14-9.
- Vassar's lead expanded to 20-12 on a Jenkins kill before a block from Bertini and Cochran made it 22-13.
- The Brewers used two kills from Bertini and an ace from Birnbaum to take the opening set.
Second Set
- The Brewers pulled in front 7-4 to start the second set as Cochran, Bertini, Birnbaum and first year Darwin Davis each buried a kill.
- Two kills from Luka Erickson and one winner from Tucker Curtis cut the deficit to 11-9.
- Arcadia got back within one on a kill from Harrison McCleery and the Knights tied the set at 15 following a Curtis winner.
- An ace from first year Kaden Chen along with two blocks from the trio of Cochran, Birnbaum amd Bertini regained a 19-16 lead.
- Winners from Josh Clendening and Curtis trimmed the lead to 22-21 but a Jenkins kill and two Arcadia error helped the Brewers take the second set win.
Third Set
- Neither team pulled ahead by more than a point until an ace from McCleery gave Arcadia a 9-7 lead.
- Vassar answered with seven of the next eight points behind four kills from Birnbaum and a winner each from Jenkins and Bertini.
- Clendening and Curtis each tallied a kill to bring the Knights back within one.
- Vassar used a kill apiece from Birnbaum and Davis and a solo block from Cochran to push the lead up to four.
- Arcadia got within a point at 18-17 until the Brewers responded with blocks from Dow, Birnbaum and Jenkins along with a winner each from Jenkins and Birnbaum to score a 23-19 lead.
- VC used two errors from Arcadia in the final two points to earn the 25-20 set win.
For The Brewers
- Bertini tallied 10 kills (.421), four blocks and four digs while Birnbaum closed a strong day with 10 kills, an ace, five blocks and seven digs.
- Jenkins finished with eight winners (.571) and two blocks along with Davis totaling five kills and six digs.
- Chen handed out 19 assists while Schoenl added 13 assists and six digs.
- Cochran recorded two kills and six blocks and McMenamin lifted a career-high 12 digs.
For The Knights
- Curtis garnered nine kills and seven digs while Clendening scored eight kills, two blocks and 13 digs.
- Dodd added four kills while Erickson posted three kills and a block.
- McCleery recorded two kills, two aces and five digs while Riley Kodidek finished with 23 assists, eight digs, an ace and a solo block.
- Cameron Birch lifted eight digs.
