#RV Vassar Drops Conference Matchup With #15 New Paltz

Brewers fall to 0-3 in UVC play

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #RV Vassar College Men's Volleyball team fell in straight sets at home on Wednesday night as the Brewers dropped a 12-25, 16-25, 26-28 decision to #15 New Paltz in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action. Vassar's record moves to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play while the Hawks improve to 13-5 on the season and 3-0 in league matchups.

First Set
  • Vassar held a 4-3 lead to begin the match on three kills from junior Armaan Desai and a block from Desai, junior Parker Schoenl and junior Walter Birnbaum.
  • New Paltz rattled off seven straight points, led by two kills each from Nikko Tenedorio and Peter Brutschin, to take a 10-4 lead.
  • Two winners from junior Henry Bonney and a Birnbaum kill cut the Hawks advantage to 14-8.
  • New Paltz's lead ballooned to 23-10 following two winners from Geoff Ndoria and a solo block from Brutschin before taking the opening set 25-12.
Second Set
  • The Hawks collected a 6-3 advantage in the second set as Michael Spiegel buried two kills along with a winner from Tenedorio.
  • A block from sophomore Stuart Dow, Birnbaum and Schoenl got the Brewers within one before the lead grew back to 10-6 on a Ndoria ace.
  • New Paltz built its lead to 17-9 following two kills and two blocks from Krish Jain and a winner from Spiegel.
  • Winners from first year Darwin Davis and Desai trimmed the lead down to 19-11.
  • NP closed the set with kills from Jain, Spiegel and Tenedorio to score a 25-16 second set win.
Third Set
  • New Paltz pulled ahead 7-4 in the third stanza as Spiegel tallied three kills along with two winners from Jain.
  • The lead grew to 14-7 as Spiegel landed an ace and Brutschin garnered a solo block.
  • Vassar battled back to cut the deficit to 16-13 on a kill from Dow, a solo block from Birnbaum and an ace from Bonney.
  • The Hawks lead expanded back to 23-17 on back-to-back aces from Matt Kudlinski and two kills from Brutschin.
  • VC made a late push to even the set at 23 following six straight kills from Bonney.
  • The set extended to a 26-26 tie before a Ndoria kill and a VC error closed the sweep for New Paltz.
For The Brewers
  • Bonney tallied a team-high 11 kills, an ace, a block and three digs while Desai recorded five winners and two blocks.
  • Birnbaum garnered five kills and four blocks (two solo) along with Dow chipping in two kills and two blocks.
  • Schoenl posted 17 assists, two blocks nd four digs while senior Casey McMenamin lifted four digs.
For The Hawks
  • Spiegel led the way with a match-high 14 kills, two aces and nine digs while Ndoria tallied eight kills, two aces and four digs.
  • Tenedorio posted seven kills, two blocks and four digs along with Jain buried six kills (1.000) and two blocks.
  • Brutschin registered six kills (.857) and four blocks (two solo) while Matt Marusza handed out a match-high 31 assists.

  • Vassar concludes its homestand on Saturday with a conference match against Elmira at 12:00 p.m. followed by a matchup with #1 Springfield at 4:00 pm.
  • New Paltz travels to Arcadia on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
