Vassar Drops Senior Day Decision To RIT

Brewers honor four seniors prior to tip-off

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team closed out the home regular season schedule Saturday afternoon with a 56-45 loss to visiting RIT on Senior Day. Prior to tip-off the Brewers recognized Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA), Ava Gurley (Austin, TX), Sam Lederman (East Brunswick, NJ) and Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) for their contributions to the program over the course of their careers.
 
Saturday's defeat drops Vassar to 10-13 overall on the season and to 9-7 in conference play, while RIT sits a tie for first in the league standings at 14-2 to go along with a 17-6 overall record.
 
How It Happened
  • After falling behind by three points twice in the first quarter, the Brewers jumped out in front 8-6 on a Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) three-pointer at the 3:30 mark of the opening stanza.
  • Vassar moved its lead to four points twice late in the quarter with a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) bucket making the score 12-8 with 30 seconds left.
  • Erin DiPaola canned a jumper in the closing seconds to bring the visitors to within 12-10 through 10 minutes of action.
  • Vassar maintained the advantage into the second frame until a Faye Kaplinski conversion moved the Tigers in front 15-14 two-and-a-half minutes into the stanza.
  • The Kaplinski bucket was part of a 12-0 RIT run that saw the Tigers surge in front 24-16 with just under three minutes left before halftime.
  • The Brewers got buckets from McDermed and Regan in the final 1:17 of the half to move to within 26-22 at the intermission.
  • Vassar shot 40.9-percent prior to halftime and hit on one of its five three-point attempts.
  • RIT converted at 44-percent over the opening 20 minutes and knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
  • Regan and McDermed led the Brewers with six points apiece at the break.
  • Maddy Ramsgard led all scorers for RIT with eight first half points.
  • Vassar would pull even twice in the early stages of the third period before grabbing a 30-29 lead on a McDermed layup just under four minutes into the second half.
  • RIT would regain a 32-31 lead on a Ben Kayser-Cochran three-point play, which started a 6-0 run to close the quarter.
  • RIT used a 7-2 run, capped by a Kayser-Cochran three-pointer, to push its lead to 43-33 just over three minutes into the final period.
  • The Tigers grabbed a game-high 11-point lead three times in the fourth quarter and did not allow Vassar closer than seven points after pushing the lead to double-figures.
  • Four Ramsgard free-throws in the final minute pushed the Tigers' advantage to the final 56-45 decision.
  • Vassar was held to 29.6-percent shooting in the second half and went 1-for-5 from three-point range.
  • RIT converted at 43.5-percent after halftime and went 2-for-6 from long distance.
 
For The Brewers
  • Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) came off the bench to lead the Brewers in scoring with 12 points, adding a team-high eight rebounds.
  • McDermed scored 11 points, totaled five rebounds, handed out three assists and swiped two steals.
  • Regan contributed eight points and a steal.
  • Lovet went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and secured a rebound.
  • Ippolito scored five points and collected three rebounds.
 
For The Tigers
  • Ramsgard led all scorers with 18 points, going 7-for-15 from the field, and added eight rebounds.
  • Kayser-Cochran tallied 12 points and secured four rebounds.
  • DiPaola chipped in nine points on 4-for-6 shooting.
  • Kaplinski finished with seven points, five caroms and a pair of helpers.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the day shooting 34.7-percent overall and went 2-for-10 from behind the arc. '
  • RIT converted at 43.8-percent and knocked down four three-pointers.
  • Vassar doubled up RIT in second chance points, 16-8.
  • RIT outscored Vassar in the paint 24-22.
  • The Vassar bench outscored the Tigers' bench 26-7.
