Cambridge, MA - The #13 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team was outlasted on Saturday afternoon by #19 MIT in the UVC opener as the Brewers fell in a five-set marathon 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 11-15 to the Engineers on the road. Vassar's record drops to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in league play while MIT improves to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in UVC action.
First Set
- Vassar took a 5-3 lead to begin the match on two kills from junior Armaan Desai along with a winner from sophomore Henry Bonney before the Engineers evened the set at five on an ace from Braeden Baker.
- VC regained the lead at 11-7 following a kill each from Bonney and sophomore Stuart Dow and a block from Dow and Bonney.
- The lead expanded to 14-8 on a winner from Desai along with a block from sophomore Petar Miocinovic and Desai.
- MIT battled back to cut the deficit to 17-15 on three Baker kills and a winner each from Matthew Louis and Maddox Brandenburg.
- Two winners from Birnbaum and a kill from Miocinovic pushed the lead to 21-16 as MIT could only get within three on two kills from Henry Garewal.
- Desai's winner at 25-21 gave Vassar the first set victory.
Second Set
- The Brewers scored a 7-4 lead to open the second set on a kill each from Miocinovic, Desai and Bonney along with a block from Desai and Birnbaum.
- MIT earned the lead at 9-8 on aces from Alexander Garrett and Colin Zimmerman.
- VC pulled back ahead 14-12 on a kill apiece from Desai and Bonney followed by an ace from Birnbaum.
- MIT trimmed the lead to 19-18 on a Brandenburg winner followed by a five-point run, led by a kill each from Baker, Garewal and Nate Toth to put the Engineers ahead 23-20.
- Vassar got within two on a Desai winner but back-to-back kills from Louis and Baker to even the match at one set apiece.
Third Set
- The Brewers raced to a 9-2 lead to start set three as a kill and an ace from senior James Zuckerman along with an ace from Miocinovic.
- Aces from Zimmerman and Nathaniel Black helped cut the lead to 14-9.
- VC pushed the lead up to 19-12 on a kill and an ace from Miocinovic and winner each from Birnbaum and junior Enzo Bertini.
- MIT's block from Brandenburg and Garewal reduced the lead to 22-17.
- Vassar took the third set, led by a kill from Bertini, to close the set with a 25-18 victory.
Fourth Set
- Once again, Vassar took the early lead at 7-4 after two kills from Birnbaum along with a block from Dow and Birnbaum.
- Following a block from Bonney and Dow to go up 9-5, MIT rattled off five straight points to take a 10-8 lead on a Baker and Brandenburg block.
- Garrett's winner pushed the MIT lead to 17-14 until the Brewers got back within one on consecutive winners from Dow and Birnbaum.
- Bonney's winner and blocks from Miocinovic, Bonney and Birnbaum brought the Brewers even at 19.
- MIT tallied five straight points, led by two Baker aces and a winner each from Brandenburg, Garewal and Toth, to pull back in front 24-19.
- Miocinovic's kill slowed the Engineers run at 24-20 but a Garrett kill sent the match to a fifth set.
Fifth Set
- VC scored a 5-3 advantage to start the fifth set as Desai and Miocinovic each buried a kill.
- MIT regained the lead at 9-7 following three Baker kills, a Black ace and a winner from Louis.
- The Brewers pulled back ahead behind a kill each from Bonney and Birnbaum along with a solo block from Desai.
- The Engineers scored the next four points behind two aces from Baker and a winner each from Toth and Garewal.
- Bonney's winner cut the lead to two but MIT used a winner from Garewal and a block from Garrett and Louis to close the five-set win for the Engineers.
For The Brewers
- Bonney tallied a team-high 14 kills, four blocks and five digs while Birnbaum recorded 11 kills, six blocks and 12 digs.
- Desai finished with nine winners and six blocks (one solo) along with Miocinovic adding eight kills, two aces, three blocks (one solo) and eight digs.
- Dow chipped in seven kills, four blocks and five digs while junior Parker Schoenl totaled 42 assists and eight digs.
- Senior Casey McMenamin lifted nine digs.
For The Engineers
- Baker supplied a match-high 17 kills, five aces and 10 digs along with Garewal tallying 14 kills and eight digs.
- Brandenburg posted six kills and three blocks along with five winners, two blocks and five digs from Toth.
- Garrett registered five kills and two aces while Louis added three kills and five blocks.
- Zimmerman finished with 42 assists, two aces, two blocks and 11 digs along with George Chang lifting a match-high 13 digs.
