Poughkeepsie, NY - The #17 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team was outlasted in five sets for the second straight match on Friday night as the Brewers fell 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 18-25, 11-15 to Hobart in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action.
Vassar's record drops to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league play while the Statesmen improve to 7-9 on the season and 1-0 in UVC action.
First Set
- Hobart began the match with a 5-3 lead behind an ace from Daniel Sappia, a kill from Aiden Kemora and a block from Alain Malcolm and Harry Fromberg.
- Following the Statesmen holding a 6-5 lead, Vassar scored nine straight points behind three aces from junior Armaan Desai, a solo block from junior Parker Schoenl and a kill from sophomore Stuart Dow to pull ahead 14-6.
- The lead ballooned to 18-8 after two aces and a kill from junior Walter Birnbaum and a winner from sophomore Henry Bonney.
- A kill from Kemora and a solo block from Malcolm trimmed the lead to 19-12 until kills from Desai and sophomore Petar Miocinovic pushed the advantage to 22-14.
- A three-point run, capped by a Kemora winner and a block from Kian Kischke and Kemora, brought the Statesmen within 24-19.
- Bonney notched the set-clinching kill for the 25-19 set win.
Second Set
- Both teams traded points in the early stages of the second set as Hobart took a 9-7 lead on a Kemora kill.
- VC got within 15-13 on a Dow winner and pulled ahead 17-16 on an ace from first year Kaden Chen.
- Following the Brewers taking a 20-18 lead, Hobart evened the set at 20 on a kill from Kischke.
- Bonney's kill gave Vassar a 23-22 advantage but the Statesmen used kills from Kemora and Noah DeLong to rally for a 25-23 set victory.
Third Set
- Neither team pulled ahead by more than a point until Vassar gained a 12-9 lead on an ace from Miocinovic.
- The lead expanded to 17-11 on two kills from Birnbaum, an ace from Schoenl and a solo block from Dow.
- Dow's kill propelled the Brewers lead to 19-12 until Hobart cut the deficit to 19-14 on a Sappia ace.
- A block from Desai, Miocinovic and Bonney pushed the advantage to 21-14 as the Brewers cruised to a 25-17 set win on a kill from senior James Zuckerman.
Fourth Set
- Hobart earned a 6-2 lead to begin the fourth set on kills from Kemora, DeLong and Fromberg.
- VC got within 7-5 before winners from Fromberg and Kischke added to the Hobart lead at 10-5.
- Following the Statesmen pulling ahead 13-6, Vassar cut the lead to 13-8 on a Bonney winner and an ace from Dow.
- DeLong's kill put Hobart on top 17-10 until two kills from Desai and a winner from Birnbaum got the Brewers within 18-14.
- Hobart expanded its lead to 22-15 on a block from Kischke and Sappia and sent the match to the fifth set on a Kemora kill.
Fifth Set
- Vassar held a 4-3 lead to open the final set on a winner from Miocinovic.
- After evening the set at five, Vassar used a kill from Birnbaum and a block from Schoenl and Dow to go ahead 7-5.
- Hobart tied the set at eight on a kill from Fromberg and a block from Malcolm and Fromberg.
- A block from Kiscke and a Vassar attack error pushed the Statesmen ahead 11-10.
- The set evened at 11 on a Hobart error before two kills from Kemora and one from Fromberg scored the five-set win for the Statesmen.
For The Brewers
- Birnbaum registered a team-high 14 kills (.320), two aces, two blocks and five digs while Desai posted 11 kills (.389), three aces and four blocks.
- Bonney tallied 11 kills (.226) and three blocks along with Dow adding three kills, two aces and four blocks.
- Miocinovic chipped in four kills, an ace, two blocks and five digs while Schoenl garnered 32 assists, an ace, four blocks and five digs.
- Senior Casey McMenamin lifted a team-high seven digs.
For The Statesmen
- Kemora secured a match-high 18 kills while Fromberg tallied 13 kills and four blocks.
- DeLong finished with 11 kills and four digs along with Sappia registering five kills, two aces, two blocks and four digs.
- Malcolm chipped in three kills and five blocks while Kischke posted two kills, two aces and four blocks.
- Zack Farren recorded 24 assists and five digs along with Tor Boughal handing out 19 assists.
