Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team earned its second straight overtime victory on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers held off RIT, 67-61, on Senior Day at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Sophomore
Parker Neuenhaus led four-double digit scorers with 18 points as the Brewers close the home regular season schedule with a 10-1 record.
Vassar improves to 17-6 overall and 13-3 in Liberty League play, which is the most conference wins in program history and is the most wins in a season since 2021-22. RIT falls to 5-18 on the season and 2-14 in league action. The Brewers also celebrated its three seniors of
JP Miranda,
Sacha Greenberg and
Nathan Denham prior to Saturday's action.
First Half
- Following a Xavier Nelson jumper to put the Tigers ahead 6-3, VC scored the next 12 points, led by six points from junior Shea Fitzgerald, four points from Neuenhaus and a jumper from Greenberg to take a 15-6 lead.
- RIT cut the lead to 17-15 on a three-pointer from Nolan Smith before five straight points from Greenberg pushed VC ahead 22-17 with 5:58 remaining.
- Back-to-back layups from Nigel Pierman brought the Tigers within a point at 22-21 with five minutes remaining.
- The lead got back to three points on a jumper from junior Sebastian Medina before Zac Ditzel's bucket trimmed the Vassar halftime lead to 28-27.
- VC finished the first half shooting 40-percent from the field and converted 3-for-7 from three-point distance.
- RIT closed the opening 20 minutes shooting 39.4-percent overall and were held to 1-for-10 from three-point range.
Second Half
- The Tigers took its first lead to begin the second half on a Ditzel jumper before back-to-back makes from Medina and Neuenhaus put Vassar back in front 32-29.
- Josiah Turner's lay-in with 15 minutes left regained the RIT lead at 33-32 until eight consecutive points from the Brewers, capped by four points from Greenberg and a bucket each from Denham and Medina, pushed Vassar back ahead 40-33.
- RIT answered with seven straight tallies as Turner's jumper at the 11:14 mark tied the game at 40.
- Two made free throws from Medina and a dunk from Denham propelled the Brewers ahead 46-42 with 7:45 remaining in regulation.
- After a Greenberg three put VC ahead 51-47 with just under six minutes to go, RIT battled back to take a 53-51 lead on a Danny Cohen layup with 4:11 to go.
- Four points from Fitzgerald and a lay-in from Neuenhaus regained the lead at 57-55 with 2:46 remaining.
- Consecutive makes from Turner gave RIT the lead with just 49 seconds remaining in the second half.
- Neuenhaus' jumper with 26 seconds left evened the game at 59 as RIT's final look rimmed out to send the game to overtime for the second straight game.
- VC shot 38.2-percent from the field in the second half and went just 1-for-12 from three-point territory.
- RIT improved to 59.1-percent overall in the second 20 minutes.
Overtime
- Vassar scored the first six points of the overtime period following makes from Denham, Neuenhaus and junior Kreekor Karageuzian to take a 65-59 lead with 1:09 left.
- Mushin Muhammed's lay-in with 51 seconds left cut the lead to four but a Neuenhaus bucket with 23 seconds left pushed the Brewers ahead 67-61 and helped earn Vassar's 13th conference win of the season.
- RIT was limited to 1-for-12 from the field in the OT period while Vassar converted 4-for-6 from the field.
For The Brewers
- Neuenhaus tallied a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds along with Fitzgerald posting 14 points and six rebounds.
- Greenberg finished with 14 points and six boards while Medina added 10 points and two steals off the bench.
- Denham totaled eight points and seven rebounds while Karageuzian chipped in two points, three assists, three steals and five rebounds.
For The Tigers
- Turner registered a team-high 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks while Pierman posted 11 points and five boards off the bench.
- Muhammad added eight points, two assists and five rebounds along with Smith posting six points, six boards and two steals.
Game Statistics
- Vassar finished the day shooting 41.4-percent from the field while going 4-for-19 from three-point range.
- RIT closed the matchup shooting 40.3-percent overall and went just 2-for-21 from three-point distance.
- The Brewers outscored the Tigers 18-4 in points off turnovers and 8-0 in fast break points.
- RIT held a 10-8 edge in second chance points and 46-40 in points in the paint.
