Geneva, NY - Alex Moesch knocked down a game-winning jumper with just under two seconds left as the Vassar College Men's Basketball team fell 70-68 on the road against Hobart on Friday evening.
The Brewers slip to 17-7 overall and 13-4 in Liberty League play while the Statesmen improve to 13-11 on the season and 7-10 in conference action. Vassar now sits along in third place following today's results.
First Half
- The Statesmen held a 7-4 lead in the opening minutes on a Monty Nedd lay-in before back-to-back triples from senior Sacha Greenberg and junior Shea Fitzgerald pulled VC ahead 10-7 at the 15:38 mark.
- A three-point play from Allen Mordi gave Hobart a 15-14 advantage until consecutive jumpers from sophomore Parker Neuenhaus and junior Kreekor Karageuzian regained a three-point lead with 10 minutes left in the first half.
- VC used a layup from junior Sebastian Medina to pull ahead 27-23 with 6:35 to go until makes from Justin Price and Dorian Paki pushed Hobart ahead 30-29 with 3:17 remaining.
- A three from Mordi and a layup from Paki put the Statesmen ahead by six in the final minute of the half but a Karageuzian three-point play cut the halftime deficit to three.
- Vassar shot 44.8-percent in the first half while connecting on 4-for-13 from three-point distance.
- Hobart finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 35.3-percent from the field, including 4-for-12 from three, and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line.
Second Half
- A 6-0 run to begin the second half put Hobart ahead 43-34 until back-to-back buckets from Fitzgerald and Greenberg trimmed the deficit to five.
- The lead grew back to nine on a layup from Price at the 15:22 mark until VC used a 8-1 run to bring the advantage down to two with 12:44 left on a three-pointer from sophomore Will Gregory.
- Gabriel Bergeron's jumper pushed Hobart ahead by six before VC cut the lead back down to two on makes from first year Gyasi Zinn and Fitzgerald.
- Five straight points from Nedd ballooned the lead to 62-55 at the 7:27 mark as the Brewers reduced the lead to four on a Fitzgerald triple with just over six minutes remaining.
- The lead was cut down to just one on a reverse layup from Medina and a Fitzgerald jumper with 3:05 to go in regulation.
- After Paki made two free throws to push the lead to three, Neuenhaus buried a three-pointer to bring Vassar even at 67 with 2:25 left.
- The Brewers took a one-point lead on a made free throw from Medina with 1:46 remaining before Hobart tied the game at 68 on a Paki free throw with 1:24 left.
- Moesch knocked down the game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds left on the clock as Vassar got a good look around mid court but the shot bounced out at the horn.
- VC closed the second 20 minutes shooting 45.2-percent overall while finishing 4-for-12 from three-point territory.
- Hobart improved to 42.9-percent in the second half and converted on 3-for-8 from three-point distance.
For The Brewers
- Fitzgerald finished with a game-high 26 points (10-for-19), seven assists and seven rebounds while Neuenhaus tallied 12 points, three assists and three rebounds.
- Senior Nathan Denham registered seven points and five boards while Karageuzian totaled five points, four assists and four rebounds.
- Medina chipped in five points along with Greenberg recorded five points and five rebounds.
For The Statesmen
- Moesch tallied a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds while Paki posted 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
- Nedd recorded 12 points, five boards and three assists along with Mordi garnering 10 points and eight rebounds.
- Jackson Carey and Price each chipped in six points off the bench.
Game Statistics
- Vassar finished the game shooting 45-percent from the field while converting 8-for-25 from beyond the three-point line.
- Hobart closed the contest shooting 38.7-percent overall while going 7-for-20 from three and 15-for-21 from the free throw line.
- Hobart outscored the Brewers 16-13 in points off turnovers.
- VC held a 10-7 edge in second chance points and 32-30 advantage in points in the paint.
