Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team was upended at home Friday evening, falling to visiting Union by a score of 54-48. Senior
Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) led a trio of Brewers in scoring with a game-high 17 points.
Friday's loss drops Vassar to 10-12 overall on the season and to 9-6 against conference rivals, while Union remains in a tie for first in the league standings at 13-2 to go along with a 17-5 overall record.
How It Happened
- A back-and-forth first quarter saw Vassar grab an 8-5 lead on a McDermed jumper with 4:37 left in the frame.
- Union used a 7-2 stretch, including a Kate Peek three-pointer, to jump in front 12-10 in the final minute of the frame.
- Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) canned a pair of free-throws in the final half minute of the quarter to send the two teams to the second stanza knotted at 12-12.
- Vassar opened the second period with back-to-back buckets from Lovett off of Union turnovers to move in front 16-12.
- The Brewers maintained the lead until a Jelena Perovic layup tied the score at 18-18 just under four minutes into the stanza.
- Vassar went on to hold Union off the board for nearly three minutes, but could only manage a 20-18 advantage.
- A Morgan Schultz conversion tied the score at 20-20 and started a quick 7-0 run capped by a Ryley Tate-Padian triple that moved the Granet Chargers out to a 25-20 advantage.
- The Brewers would get free-throws from McDermed and Lindsey Shoulders (Glen All, VA) in the final minute of the half to pull to within 25-22 heading into the intermission.
- Vassar shot 33.3-percent in the opening 20 minutes and went without a three-pointer in three attempts.

- Vassar would get to within seven points twice in the late stages of the quarter with a McDermed layup in the closing seconds getting the Brewers to within 42-35 with 10 minutes left to play.
- A Lovett layup early in the final frame made the score 44-38, but the Garnet Chargers came back with the next five points, including another Tate-Padian three-pointer to surge back in front 49-38.
- Vassar received buckets from Lovett and McDermed in the final three minutes, but Union knocked in a pair of free-throws between the conversions to secure the final 54-48 advantage.
- Vassar was limited to 28.6-percent shooting after halftime and went 0-for-4 from behind the arc.
- Union shot 35.7-percent in the second half and connected on two three-pointers.
For The Brewers
- McDermed finished 6-for-14 from the floor on her way to a game-high 17 points, closing a double-double with 10 rebounds. McDermed handed out an assist, blocked two shots and swiped a pair of steals.
- Lovett scored in double-figures for the fourth time this season, scoring 14 points after going 5-for-14 from the floor while adding six rebounds and three steals.
- Shoulders chipped in 11 points off the bench to go along with three rebounds and two steals.
- Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) took away three steals and collected three rebounds for the Brewers.
For The Garnet Chargers
- Tate-Padian came off the bench to lead Union with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor that included two triples.
- Peek knocked down three triples and totaled 12 points and a pair of steals.
- Olivia Cunningham hauled in a game-high 13 points to go along with eight points and three assists.
- Grace Ceseretti led all players with four assists and secured five rebounds.

- Vassar was held to 30.9-percent shooting overall and went 0-for-7 from three-point range, marking the second straight game without a conversion from behind the arc.
- Union shot 37.7-percent overall and went 5-for-18 from bonus distance.
- Vassar outscored Union 14-9 from the free-throw line.
- Vassar held a 12-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.
- Points in the paint also went the way of the Brewers, 32-26.
