Vassar Completes Regular Season Sweep Of Clarkson

Four Brewers score in double-figures

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) led four players in double-figures with 13 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team swept the regular season series from Clarkson Saturday afternoon with a 65-53 road victory.
 
Vassar evens its record at 9-9 overall and moves to 8-3 in conference play with Saturday's win, while Clarkson falls to 8-11 and 4-8 in league action. The win also marks the seventh straight for the Brewers over the Golden Knights.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar opened the game with a 10-0 run, getting contributions from four different players, over the first 5:29 of the contest.
  • Vassar held Clarkson off the board until the 3:28 mark of the first quarter when a Maddy Polky triple opened the Golden Knights' account.
  • Clarkson made just three field goals in the opening 10 minutes, but all three came from behind the arc to trail just 13-9 through the opening stanza.
  • After the two teams combined for just 22 points in the first period, they erupted for 33 points in the second frame.
  • Clarkson opened the second quarter on a 7-2 spurt that saw it take its only lead of the game when a Emma Chambers bucket made the score 16-15.
  • The Brewers answered with a Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) jumper to regain a one-point lead with 6:10 left before the break.
  • Vassar expanded its lead to 24-18 on an Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) conversion late in the quarter and an 8-2 run to close the period, capped by another Mullen bucket, sent the Brewers into the intermission leading 32-23.
  • The Brewers converted at 36-percent over the opening 20 minutes and went 0-for-5 from behind the arc.
  • Clarkson shot 33.3-percent in the first half and finished 4-for-10 from behind the arc.
  • Vassar pushed its lead to double-figures for the first time on an Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) triple just under two-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter.
  • A Ware jumper at the 5:45 mark pushed Vassar in front 41-30, before a 10-2 stretch from the Golden Knights brought them to with 43-40 at the 1:50 mark.
  • A three-point play and a layup in the final half minute of the period from Lovett sparked a quick 7-0 run that sent Vassar to the final stanza leading 50-40.
  • Vassar maintained the lead for the duration of the quarter and held a lead as large as 15 points on two occasions.
  • A Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) three-pointer made the score 63-48 with 3:45 left and a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) fast break bucket gave the Brewers a 65-50 lead with 2:09 left.
  • Clarkson scored the final three points of the contest to pull to within the final 12-point deficit.
  • Vassar improved to 50-percent shooting after halftime and hit on a pair of three-pointers.
  • Clarkson shot 40.7-percent in the second half and canned five three-pointers.
 
For The Brewers
  • Lovett came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 13 points. Lovett went 4-for-8 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line to go along with six rebounds.
  • Ware tallied 11 points and collected three rebounds.
  • Sierra McDermed and Regan both recorded 10 points. McDermed closed the win with five boards and three steals with Regan supplying six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
  • Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) chipped in nine points, four rebounds and two assists.
 
For The Golden Knights
  • Fallon Griffin led all players with 16 points and added two steals.
  • Addie Kea scored nine points and handed out a game-high five assists.
  • Polky finished with seven points, four assists and two steals.
  • Bella Doyle contributed eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game shooting 43.1-percent overall, but went 2-for-11 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson shot 37-percent for the game and connected on nine three-pointers.
  • Vassar outscored Clarkson 19-4 from the free-throw line.
  • The Brewers held a 19-9 edge in points off of turnovers.
  • Vassar outscored Clarkson 26-20 in the paint.
