Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Vassar Past St. Lawrence

Four score in double-figures; Ware matches career-high

Poughkeepsie, NY – Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) led four Brewers in double-figures with 15 points and fellow First Year Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) matched her career-high with 11 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team finished off a sweep of its first Liberty Lague weekend of the New Year with a 70-58 victory over St. Lawrence.
 
Vassar's second straight victory pushes the Brewers to 5-6 overall on the season and a perfect 4-0 in conference play. St. Lawrence slips to 8-4 overall and 3-2 against conference rivals.
 
How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first half saw Vassar gain a 16-14 lead through 10 minutes of play.
  • St. Lawrence grabbed a quick 7-2 lead on a Jackie Malley three-pointer just over three minutes into the contest.
  • Vassar came back with a 9-3 run, capped by an Erin Lovett layup, to pull in front 11-10 with 2:48 left in the stanza.
  • The two teams would trade the last four baskets of the period with Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) hitting a three to make the score 16-12 ahead of a Norah Niesz bucket in the closing seconds that brought the Saints to within two.
  • A high scoring second quarter saw Vassar outscore the Saints 20-19 to carry a 36-33 lead into halftime.
  • The quarter featured 14 lead changes with McDermed scoring the final three points of the half, including a jumper at the second quarter horn to produce the three-point halftime advantage.
  • Vassar shot an efficient 48.1-percent from the field in the first half and went 5-for-6 from three-point range.
  • St. Lawrence converted at 43.3-percent before halftime and knocked down four triples.
  • McDermed led the Brewers at the half with nine points.
  • Annie Perry paced all scorers with 11 first half points.
  • Vassar raced out to a 43-35 lead coming out of halftime on a Shoulders three-pointer.
  • The advantage grew to double-figures for the first time when Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) hit a jumper to move Vassar in front 47-37.
  • The Brewers got conversions from McDermed and Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) in the final minute of the third quarter to make the lead 53-40 with 10 minutes left to play.
  • A Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) bucket pushed the Vassar lead to 58-43 with 8:08 left to play.
  • St. Lawrence would get its disadvantage down to eight points on four occasions in the final period, but Vassar converted four free-throws around a Shoulders bucket to earn the final 70-58 decision.
  • Vassar converted at 46.4-percent overall in the second half and made one more three-pointer.
  • St. Lawrence cooled to 21.4-percent shooting after halftime and finished 3-for-11 from three-point range.
 
For The Brewers
  • Ware reached double-figures for the second time this season, netting 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Ware rounded out the win with three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Shoulders scored in double-figures for the eighth time this season, reaching 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Shoulders produced her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Ippolito matched her season-high with 13 points after going 4-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
  • McDermed tallied 13 points and added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block to the winning effort.
  • Regan scored seven points and collected six rebounds for the Brewers.
  • Lovett came off the bench to scored six points, collect seven rebounds and hand out three assists.
 
For the Saints
  • Perry led all scorers with 16 points and led the team with three assists.
  • Niesz came off the bench to score 14 points and collect four rebounds.
  • Malley tallied 12 points and handed out two assists.
  • Hannah Van Dyke recorded a team-high eight rebounds for the Saints.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 47.3-percent overall in the game and went 6-for-14 from three-point range.
  • St. Lawrence converted at 32.8-percent overall and finished 7-for-21 from behind the arc.
  • Vassar controlled the paint with a 32-14 advantage in points inside the lane.
  • Second chance points in the contest were even at 12-12.
