Northampton, MA - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team completed a 2-1 weekend at the Bonnie May Invitational after toppling Dean 25-12, 24-26, 25-10, 25-14 in the first match of the day followed by a 25-10, 25-20, 25-11 sweep of Saint Joseph (CT) in the second match. Vassar's record improves to 4-1 on the season.
Vassar 3 Dean 1
First Set
- Vassar raced out to an early 8-3 lead behind two kills from junior Holland Kaplan, a block from sophomore Erin Lovett and first year Ellen Zwerling and a kill each from senior Rebecca Gutierrez, Lovett and sophomore Eleanor Gegen.
- Maddie Bell's service ace cut the Brewers lead down to 8-5 before a Zwerling kill and an ace from first year Summer Stern pushed the lead to 11-5, forcing a Dean timeout.
- Two kills from Lovett, another ace from Stern and an ace and winner from Zwerling expanded the lead to 17-6.
- Dean cut the lead to 18-11 following two aces from Chloe DeMaio, one ace from Emma Siniscalchi and a kill from Caitlin Cooper.
- Vassar answered with five straight points behind two Kaplan winners and two Medrano aces to push the lead to 23-11.
- Kaplan closed the set with a kill and an ace to take the opening set 25-12.
Second Set
- Following a Maddy Seymour kill that evened the set at six all, Vassar used two kills apiece from Gegen and Zwerling along with an ace and a winner from Medrano to take a 15-9 lead.
- Dean battled back to even the set at 18 behind a kill from DeMaio and a block from DeMaio and Mia Cote.
- A winner from Kaplan put the Brewers back ahead 19-18 before a Cooper kill and back-to-back kills from Seymour gave the Bulldogs a 21-19 advantage.
- VC scored three straight points, led by a kill apiece from Kaplan and Gegen, to pull back in front 22-21.
- Dean regained the lead at 24-22 for set point but a kill from Zwerling and a solo block from Lovett evened the set at 24.
- The Bulldogs evened the match at one set apiece after a Cote winner and a VC attack error.
Third Set
- VC soared out to a quick 10-0 lead to begin the third set as Medrano recorded four aces, Kaplan buried two kills and Gegen added a winner.
- Dean trimmed the lead to 11-5 following two Seymour aces and a kill apiece from Cooper and Valeria Cabezas.
- Bell's ace brought the Bulldogs within 14-8 until the Brewers lead grew back to 10 at 18-8 after a Kaplan kill, solo block from Zwerling and an ace from Stern.
- Two kills from Kaplan and three service aces from junior T Petro propelled Vassar to a 25-10 set victory.
Fourth Set
- Vassar earned a 9-2 lead to start the fourth behind an ace from Petro, a kill and an ace from Lovett and a Kaplan winner.
- Seymour's ace trimmed the advantage to 9-4 until a kill from Kaplan along with a winner and a solo block from first year Elena Feuer pushed VC ahead 12-4.
- The Vassar lead expanded to 18-5 following two aces from Kaplan and a kill from Medrano and Feuer.
- Dean got back within single digits at 19-10 after a kill from DeMaio and an ace from Bell.
- Vassar scored five of the final six points to win the match, led by two Stern aces, two Zwerling winners and a kill from Kaplan.
For The Brewers
- Kaplan recorded a match-high 19 kills (.457), three aces and eight digs along with Zwerling adding nine winners, two blocks and 11 digs.
- Gegen registered six kills and three digs while LOvett added four kills, three blocks and an ace.
- Medrano completed an all-around match with a match-high 34 assists, two kills, match-high seven aces and nine digs.
- Senior Ellie Kogan finished with eight digs and two aces while Petro tallied four aces and six digs and Stern chipped in five aces and four digs.
For The Bulldogs
- Seymour registered six kills, four aces and six digs along with Cote tallying six kills and a block.
- Cooper added four kills and DeMaio recorded three kills and two aces.
- Skyler Raskevitz lifted a match-high 13 digs while Bell tallied three aces and four digs.
- Carly Rettberg handed out 13 assists and lifted five digs.
Vassar Saint Joseph
First Set
- VC cruised out to a 9-1 lead to open the match following two kills each from junior Maura McAusland and Lovett and a winner apiece from Zwerling and Feuer.
- The Brewers advantage grew to 14-4 after aces from Lovett and Kogan and another kill from Lovett.
- Sofia Weiss' kill trimmed the lead down to 15-7 before kills from Petro, McAusland and Lovett increased the advantage back to 20-9.
- Vassar scored the final five points of the set as Kogan's ace clinched the 25-10 opening set victory.
Second Set
- Both teams traded points in the early stages of the set as Vassar pulled ahead 9-6 on a Zwerling ace.
- Two kills from Shaye Harris and an ace from Emilia Dugas led to Saint Joseph's drawing even at 12 all.
- Vassar answered with two kills each from McAusland and Lovett to regain the lead and move it to 17-12.
- A kill each from Harris and Dugas cut the advantage down to 22-20 until the Brewers used two McAusland kills and one winner from Lovett to take the second set 25-20.
Third Set
- VC went ahead 7-2 to begin the final set as Lovett tallied two kills along with Zwerling adding a winner and an ace from McAusland.
- McAusland buried four more winners and a winner each from Feuer and Lovett pushed Vassar ahead 20-8.
- The Brewers used three more kills from Lovett to complete the sweep with a 25-11 set victory.
For The Brewers
- Lovett set her career-high in kills with 15 (.500) and added two aces while McAusland tallied 14 kills (.462), three aces, two blocks and 11 digs.
- Zwerling recorded six kills and seven digs along with Feuer chipping in six kills.
- First year Caroline Brabeck handed out a match-high 29 assists and lifted four digs and first year Amy Melchior added six assists.
- Kogan registered five digs and two aces along with Stern lifting three digs.
For The Blue Jays
- Harris led the way with nine kills and four digs while E. Dugas finished with six kills, two digs and an ace.
- Gabriella Wanner handed out 10 assists and three digs along with Alyssa Dugs lifted a team-high 10 digs.
