Men’s Soccer Edged On The Road At Cortland

Fiske tallies in loss

Cortland, NY – The #23 Vassar College Men's Soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night, dropping a hard fought 2-1 decision at #RV Cortland. Senior Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) scored the lone goal for the Brewers.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to 2-1 through three games with Cortland improving to 3-0. Saturday's matchup marked the first meeting between the two programs since a 3-2 overtime win for the Brewers in Poughkeepsie on November 1, 2008.
 
How It Happened
  • Cortland scored two goals in just under five minutes of game action, separated by halftime, to grab a 2-0 lead on Saturday.
  • The Red Dragons broke a scoreless tie late in the first half when Sam LaMendola collected a clearance attempt and scored low to the left side of the goal at 43:56.
  • Leading 1-0 at the break, Cortland held a 10-2 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes.
  • Cortland took the only two corner kicks of the first half.
  • Vassar goalkeeper, Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY), made a trio of saves for the Brewers over the course of the first half.
  • Jordan Ott was not forced to make a save in the first half for Cortland.
  • Coming out of the break, the Red Dragons doubled their lead just 3:14 into the second stanza.
  • Josh Carroll gave Cortland a 2-0 lead when he finished off a rebound from a Scott Schuyler shot at the 48:14 mark of the contest.
  • The two-goal lead held for Cortland until the 67th minute when Vassar finally broke through and cut its deficit in half.
  • Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) worked a ball to the center of the field from the right wing before FIske made his way around the keeper and deposited his fourth goal of the season at 66:59.
  • Ott would turn aside two Vassar attempts after the goal and the Brewers got off two shots in the closing minutes that were off frame.
  • Vassar finished the second half with an 11-7 advantage in shots.
  • The Brewers also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks after halftime.
  • Raphan made one second half save, while Ott turned aside four Vassar attempts after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • Fiske scored his team leading fourth goal of the season and moved into the team lead in points with nine. 
  • Tobolski pushed his team lead in assists to four and recorded his eighth point of the season. 
  • Tobolski joined Alejandro Martinez (Lake Mary, FL) with a team-high three shots.
  • Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL) recorded two shots for the Brewers.
  • Raphan matched his season-high with four saves against the Red Dragons.
 
For The Red Dragons
  • LaMendola tallied for the first time in 2025 to open the scoring in the game.
  • Carroll potted his team leading third goal and his second game winning goal of the year.
  • Schuyler recorded his second helper of the season on the deciding tally.
  • Ott earned the win in goal with four saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Cortland finished the night with a 17-13 advantage in overall shots and a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Cortland edge Vassar in corner kicks, 4-3.
