Field Hockey Topped By Scranton

Brewers travel to #13 Wesleyan on Saturday

Scranton, PA - The Vassar College Field Hockey team hit the road for the first time in 2025 on Wednesday evening as the Brewers battled late in the fourth quarter to draw even but ultimately fell 5-3 to the University of Scranton. The Brewers record falls to 1-1 overall while the Royals improve to 3-0 on the season.

How It Happened
  • Scranton opened the scoring six minutes into the opening period as Ava De Natale found the back of the net on an assist from Lydia Bechtel.
  • Vassar earned a penalty stroke with 20 seconds left in the first quarter off a penalty corner but Royals goalkeeper Mariselle Camillone made a save on sophomore Hannah Lees to keep it at 1-0 after one.
  • The Royals doubled the lead two minutes into the second quarter following an Annie Shaw goal on a deflection from a pass from Maggie Keys.
  • VC threatened to cut the lead in half 35 seconds later as first year Sierra Chow's shot was turned away by Scranton defender Gabi Horn.
  • The Brewers trimmed the advantage to 2-1 with four minutes left in the opening half on sophomore Mackenzie Allen's shot that rocketed past the goalie for her first goal of the season.
  • Scranton's lead grew back to two goals following a corner where Horn deflected in a feed from Bechtel to make it 3-1 five minutes into the second half.
  • Keys recorded her first goal of the game on an assist from De Natele two minutes later to put the Royals ahead 4-1.
  • Chow put the Brewers back within two goals at 4-2 with seven minutes left in the third quarter with her second goal of the season.
  • VC drew within one with 11 minutes left in the game after a scramble around the net, leading to sophomore Zoe Robinson potting her third goal of the season.
  • De Natele extended the Scranton lead back to two at 5-3 with seven minutes to go off a rebound of a shot from Bechtel, her third assist of the game.
For The Brewers
  • Robinson, Allen and Chow each recorded a goal while Robinson led the team in shots with seven, including four on goal.
  • Junior Grace Wiley took the loss in goal in three quarters of action along with first year Ellie Rosen making her first appearance in goal and made a save in 15 minutes of play.
For The Royals
  • De Natale finished the game with two goals and an assist while Bechtel recorded three assists.
  • Keys registered a goal and an assist along with Horn and Shaw each tallying a goal.
  • Horn also recorded a defensive save and Camillone earned the victory in goal while making four saves.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a slim 12-11 edge in shots and 8-6 in shots on goal.
  • The Royals recorded a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.
