Panarelli’s Late Goal Lifts Vassar Over Ithaca

Junior scores third goal of the season

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior Gianna Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) scored with just over two minutes left in the second half, sending the # RV Vassar College Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 home Liberty League victory over visiting Ithaca Saturday afternoon.
 
The Brewers have opened conference play with two straight victories and now stand at 8-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in league action. Ithaca, who is now winless in its last four games against Vassar, stands at 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar controlled play in a scoreless first half, outshooting Ithaca 12-2 prior to halftime.
  • Ithaca goalkeeper, Katrina Varnum, kept the Brewers off the board in the opening stanza with four saves.
  • Varnum's best save came in the 35th minute when she made a sprawling stop off an Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) attempt.
  • The two teams remained scoreless through the majority of the second half, until Panarelli struck in the 88th minute.
  • Panarelli broke through the Ithaca backline and unleashed a shot from the top of the box that snuck through Varnum and inside the left post for the only scoring of the game.
  • Varnum kept Ithaca in the contest with six more saves after halftime, including three in a span of just under two minutes ahead of the Panarelli goal.
  • Vassar netminder, Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA), preserved the shutout with a single second half save.
  • The Brewers outshot Ithaca 10-3 in the second half and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
For The Brewers
  • Panarelli found the back of the net for the third time in 2025 and recorded her second game winning goal of the year. Panarelli finished off the game with three shots, with all three landing on target.
  • Shea earned her second clean sheet of the season with one save and now holds a 0.74 goals against average and an 0.824 save percentage.
  • Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) and Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) each led the team with five shots on Saturday.
  • Holman recorded a trio of attempts.
 
For The Bombers
  • Varnum  suffered the loss in goal with a 10 save effort on Saturday.
  • Ella Shorkey led the way with three shots for Ithaca.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar outshot Ithaca 22-5 overall and 11-1 in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers by a 7-2 margin.
  • Fouls in the contest were called 9-4 against the Bombers.
 
What's Next
