Vassar Blanks #24 RIT On The Road

Brewers deal Tigers first loss of the season

Rochester, NY – The #RV Vassar College Women's Soccer team won its third straight game and handed #24 RIT its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 road win against the Tigers. Seniors Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) and Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA) scored first half goals for the Brewers.
 
Vassar improves to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in Liberty League with Saturday's win, while RIT slips to 5-1-5 overall and 2-1-1 in league action.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar got first half goals from McGrath and Rodriguez in the 21st and 33rd minutes for all the scoring it would need in the game.
  • The eventual game winning goal came when McGrath found the back of the net off of assists from Rodriguez and Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) at the 20:10 mark of the contest.
  • The lead doubled at the 32:56 mark when Rodriguez converted a penalty kick to give the Brewers a 2-0 advantage.
  • RIT outshot Vassar 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes and the Tigers took the only two corner kicks prior to halftime.
  • A scoreless second frame featured 11 total shots with the Tigers holding a 6-5 edge in attempts.
  • The Tigers hit the crossbar twice in the first six minutes of the second half.
  • Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) preserved the shutout with one save after halftime, turning aside a Lindsay Ford attempt in the 55th minute.
  • Second half corner kicks also went to the Tigers by a 4-1 count.
For The Brewers
  • McGrath potted her fifth goal of the season and is now one of four Brewers with two game winning goals on the season.
  • Rodriguez finished a three-point day with her first goal and team leading fifth assist of the season.
  • Franklin recorded her second helper of the year and is in a three-way tie for first on the team with 12 points.
  • Rodriguez and Gianna Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) led the Brewers with two shots each in the game.
  • Shea finished with her third shutout of the season and now holds a 0.66 goals against average with one save on Saturday.
 
For The Tigers
  • Four RIT players finished the day with two shots with Ford putting the only shot on frame.
  • Avery Donnelly suffered the loss in goal with one stop.
 
Game Statistics
  • RIT held a 13-10 edge in overall shots, while Vassar posted a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • RIT posted a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
