Women's Volleyball Cruises to Road Win at Mount Saint Mary

Vassar coasts to victory over the Knights, return home to take on Russell Sage tomorrow

Newburgh, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team closed four-game road trip on Friday evening as the Brewers scored a resounding 25-6, 25-17, 25-23 victory over local foe Mount Saint Mary at the Kaplan Center. The Brewers record improves to 9-3 overall while the Knights drop to 4-9 on the season.

First Set
  • Vassar scored the first four points of the set behind two kills from sophomore Erin Lovett and expanded the lead to 9-2, capped by two winners from junior Maura McAusland.
  • The lead ballooned to 15-3 after an ace from senior Ellie Kogan, a block from senior Rebecca Gutierrez and Lovett and a kill from Gutierrez.
  • Three winners from junior Holland Kaplan, three aces from Lovett and a kill from Gutierrez put the Brewers in front 21-3.
  • VC closed the opening set with kills from Gutierrez, Kaplan and McAusland to earn the 25-6 set victory.
Second Set
  • The Brewers broke out to an 8-5 advantage following a kill apiece from Kaplan and Gutierrez along with an ace from junior T Petro.
  • Back-to-back kills from Joniaya Williams cut the lead down to 10-8 before VC scored six straight points on three aces from junior Francesca Medrano and a kill each from McAusland and first year Cayla Hoskins-Pfeiffer.
  • Kogan's ace expanded the lead to 20-10 until the Knights got back within 20-14 on two aces from Vanessa Seymour and a kill from Williams.
  • An ace and a kill from first year Amy Melchior put VC at set point and the Brewers took the set 25-17 on a MSMC error.
Third Set
  • VC collected a 4-2 lead behind an ace and a kill from McAusland along with a winner from first year Elena Feuer.
  • The Mount drew even at four on a block from Williams and Brooke Lavelle before kills from Medrano, McAusland and first year Ellen Zwerling put the Brewers on top 8-4.
  • Vassar extended the lead to 13-7 on a kill apiece from Gutierrez and McAusland and an ace from Petro.
  • MSMC cut the deficit to 15-13 behind three kills from Ava DiScala and one winner from Williams.
  • Another ace from Kogan pushed the Brewers lead to 18-13 but the Knights got within two again after a kill each from Williams and Julianna Simone along with an ace from Erin Lema.
  • The Knights got within a point at 23-22 on a Seymour kill until VC used kills from Gutierrez and McAusland to complete the sweep.
For The Brewers
  • McAusland continued her stellar junior season with 14 kills (.343) and 11 digs while Kaplan added eight kills (.467) and seven digs.
  • Gutierrez garnered seven winners and two blocks along with Lovett recording two kills, three aces and two digs.
  • Medrano registered 30 assists, four aces and nine digs while Kogan (nine digs) and Petro (five digs) each landed three aces.
For The Knights
  • Williams recorded five kills and four digs while Lavelle finished with six winners and three blocks.
  • DiScala added four kills and Simone tallied four kills and five digs.
  • Seymour registered eight assists, a kill, two aces and four digs while Sofia Fredericks chipped in seven assists and three digs.
Up Next
  • Vassar will return to action tomorrow afternoon at home against Russell Sage at 12:00 p.m.
  • Mount Saint Mary will travel to conference foe Merchant Marine on Tuesday evening.
