Morris' Goal Sends Field Hockey to 3-2 Double Overtime Victory Against Smith

First year scores game-winner halfway through the second OT period to give the Brewers its second straight victory

Northampton, MA - First year Julia Morris scored her second goal of the season halfway through the second overtime period to send the Vassar College Field Hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Smith on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers record improves to 3-2 on the season while the Bears drop to 3-2 overall.

How It Happened
  • The first quarter saw both teams remain scoreless as junior goalkeeper Grace Wiley made three stops for Vassar and Iseul Park made three saves for Smith along with a defensive save from Ellie Szostalo.
  • Vassar scored first in the second quarter as first year Sierra Chow tallied her goal of the season with about five and a half minutes left in the half.
  • The Brewers doubled the advantage just under two minutes left in the opening half on first year Sophia Jammar's third goal off an insert from classmate Sophie Gono off a corner.
  • Smith got back within a goal with just four seconds remaining in the third quarter on a shot from Callahan Day following a feed from Anouk Bosket.
  • Six minutes into the final quarter of regulation, Day added her second goal of the day to even the game at two apiece.
  • VC had three shots saved by Park late in the fourth quarter and Wiley's stop on Grace Irizarry with 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter sent the game to overtime.
  • The Brewers had all of the chances in the first overtime period as Park made two more saves and Szostalo made her second defensive save of the contest as the game moved to the second overtime period.
  • Park made three saves in the first three minutes of the second OT on first year Autumn Dowiak and Morris to keep the game tied.
  • Senior Sofia Beseth carried the ball into the circle and found first year Sydney Yu's stick, who made a pass across the crease and Morris deflected it past the goalie to clinch a 3-2 victory.
For The Brewers
  • Morris recorded her second career goal and fired a team-high eight shots, including six shots on goal.
  • Jammar and Chow each registered their third goal of the season along with Gono and Yu each picking up assists.
  • Sophomore Zoe Robinson, Dowiak and Beseth all recorded two shots on goal.
  • Wiley earned the victory in goal as the junior turned aside eight shots for the Brewers.
For The Bears
  • Day scored both goals for the Bears and fired five shots on goal.
  • Bosket tallied an assist and Halie Yung registered two shots on net.
  • Park made 15 saves in the tough luck loss in goal.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar outshot Smith 27-14 on the match, including 20-10 in shots on goal.
  • The Brewers also held a slim edge in penalty corners at 10-9.
