Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team used four second half goals, led by two goals from senior
Sofia Beseth, to run away with a 5-2 victory over Montclair State at Weinberg Field on Wednesday evening. Vassar begins the season with two victories at home and sits at 2-2 overall while the Red Hawks fall to 1-3 on the season.
How It Happened
- Vassar got on the board with just 42 seconds remaining in the first quarter as first year Autumn Dowiak recorded her first career goal following a corner to make it 1-0.
- The Brewers advantage doubled to 2-0 in the third quarter on a turnaround goal from junior Karina Hoffman for her second tally of the season.
- Sophomore Zoe Robinson expanded her team-leading goal mark to four early in the fourth period to put VC ahead 3-0.
- Montclair State answered with a goal just 50 seconds later on a mark from Sadie Eichlin to trim the lead to 3-1.
- VC responded just a minute later on Beseth's first goal of the contest to push the advantage back to three goals at 4-1.
- Beseth's third goal of the season and second of the game came 40 seconds later to increase the VC lead to 5-1.
- The Red Hawks cut the advantage down to 5-2 with about four minutes remaining on a goal from Kelly Westervelt on a feed from Bella Heiser.
- First year goalie Ellie Rosen made two saves in the final two minutes to keep the VC lead at 5-2 and clinch the second straight home victory of the season.
For The Brewers
- Beseth finished with two goals on the evening to push her to second on the squad in the category with three total.
- Robinson registered her team-leading fourth goal of the season and her second game-winning goal of the campaign.
- Dowiak added her first career goal of the season and Hoffman registered her second goal of the season and is tied for second on the team in points.
- Junior Grace Wiley earned the victory in goal with a scoreless first half while Rosen made two stops in 30 minutes of action.
For The Red Hawks
- Westervelt and Eichlin each tallied a goal along with Heiser recording an assist.
- Natalie Surma added two shots on goal while Eichlin also had two shots on net.
- Sydney White made eight saves in goal in the loss.
Game Statistics
- Vassar held a 17-9 edge in shots along with a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Brewers also held a slim 5-4 penalty corners advantage.
