Panarelli Nets Two As Brewers Overwhelm Knights

Franklin, Holman and Spektor post first career points

Newburgh, NY – Junior Gianna Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) potted a pair of goals and a trio of Brewers recorded their first career points on Sunday as the Vassar College Women's Soccer posted its second straight shutout to open the season with a 4-0 road win at Mount Saint Mary College.
 
Sunday's win gives Vassar a 2-0 start for the second straight season and the victory marked the fourth straight over the Knights and the 20th in 23 all-time meetings between the two teams.
 
How It Happened
  • Panarelli scored Vassar's first two goals inside the first 30 minutes of play on Sunday.
  • The eventual game winner came in the 12th minute before Panarelli knocked in her second of the game just under 30 minutes into the contest to give Vassar a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • The Brewers controlled play over the course of the first 45 minutes, outshooting Mount Saint Mary 15-2.
  • First half corner kicks also went to the Brewers by a 3-0 margin.
  • Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) finished the opening period with a pair of saves.
  • Mount Saint Mary starting netminder, Julianna Ewashko, turned aside seven shots before halftime for the Knights.
  • Vassar doubled its advantage in the second half with the final two goals of the contest.
  • Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) found the back of the net for the first time in her young career after finishing off an assist from senior Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA) in the 74th minute.
  • Just under four minutes later, fellow First Year Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) scored her first career goal off a feed from Olivia Spektor (Lawrenceville, NJ) with each player picking up their first career points.
  • The Brewers continued to control play in the second half, finishing the period with an 11-4 advantage in shots.
  • Vassar took six of the eight corner kicks in the second frame.
  • Emily McMahon (Mill Valley, CA) came on to play the final 19:56 in goal for the Brewers and made her first two career saves.
 
For The Brewers
  • Panarelli tallied her first two goals of the season and posted her fifth career game winning goal. Panarelli led the team with six shots in the game, putting four on frame.
  • Holman recorded three shots and became the third different Brewer to score a goal on the season.
  • Franklin recorded a pair of shots and found the scoring column for the first time.
  • Rodriguez notched her first assist of the season and now has 11 career helpers.
  • Spektor posted her first career point on the Franklin tally in the second half.
  • Riley McGrath (Coranado, CA) recorded four shots in the game for the Brewers.
  • Shea earned the win in goal with a pair of saves in just over 70 minutes of action.
  • McMahon made her first career appearance and finished with two saves.
 
For The Knights
  • Emma Mihale and Sophia Light each recorded two shots for Mount Saint Mary.
  • Ewashko closed the day with the seven first half saves.
  • Elizabeth Lennane came on to play the second half in goal and made a trio of stops for the Knights.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a convincing 26-6 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers 9-2.
  • Fouls were whistled against the Knights, 5-1.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar returns home on September 6 when it plays host to the University of Scranton.
