Brewers Battle Past NYU, 3-2

Fiske nets game winner, Tobokski records three assists

Poughkeepsie, NY – Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) scored two goals, including the game winner with just over seven minutes left in the second half, and sophomore Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) assisted on each of the Brewers' goals in a hard fought 3-2 win over visiting New York University Sunday afternoon.
 
Vassar improves to 2-0 on the season with the victory and moves it to 4-0 against the Violets all-time in the first meeting between the two sides since 1997.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar opened a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Fiske and First Year Zapp Hotz (Ridgewood, NY) separated by just 3:22 on the game clock.
  • Fiske netted his first of the game after Tobolski worked his way along the far end line and sent a centering pass into the box that Fiske buried at 15:30.
  • At 18:52, Hotz found a rebound and potted his first career goal to spread the Brewers lead to 2-0.
  • Tobolski fed a pass to Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL) and after the initial shot was saved Hotz scored into a wide open goal to double the Brewers' advantage.
  • Vassar carried the two-goal lead into halftime after outshooting NYU 11-2 in the first half.
  • First half corner kicks also went to the Brewers, 3-1.
  • Vassar maintained its 2-0 lead until the 77th minute when Terra Nagai got the Violets on the board after converting a penalty kick.
  • Just under two minutes after getting on the board, NYU's Ethan Zarka leveled the score at the 78:02 mark of the contest when he tucked a free-kick inside the far post.
  • At 2-2, Vassar nosed back in front for good in the 83rd minute when Fiske scored what proved to be the game winner.
  • Tobolski started a corner kick that Fiske deposited inside the right post at 82:44 to close out the scoring in the game.
  • NYU would have three corner kicks in the final seven minutes, but would manage just one shot that sailed high.
  • NYU held the edge in shots after halftime, 8-5.
  • Second half corner kicks went to the Violets by a 7-2 count.
 
For The Brewers
  • Fiske scored his second and third goals of the young season on Sunday and tallied his sixth career game winning goal.
  • Tobolski pushed into the team lead with seven points and matched the single game program record with three assists in the contest.
  • Hotz scored his first career goal and finished the contest with three shots.
  • Mejia, who matched the team-high in helpers a season ago with six, picked up his first assist of the campaign on Sunday.
  • Fiske led the team with five shots, putting three on target.
  • Mejia joined Hotz with a trio of attempts.
  • Quinn Davidson (Mamaroneck, NY) made his first start of the season in goal, earning the win with one save for the Brewers.
 
For The Violets
  • Nagai and Zarka each scored their second goals of the season for NYU.
  • Audric Ma joined Nagai and Zarka with a team-high two shots in the contest.
  • Netminder Ludwig Hilberts suffered the loss in goal, turning aside three shots.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and doubled up the Violets in shots on goal, 6-3.
  • Corner kicks went to the visitors by a 10-3 margin.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar heads back out on the road on September 6 when it travels to Cortland.
  • NYU makes the trip to Rutgers-Camden on September 6.
