McGrath Scores Twice; Vassar Dominates Sarah Lawrence

Senior pots first two goals of the season

Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Riley McGrath (Coranado, CA) scored twice and three Brewers picked up an assist on Saturday as the Vassar College Women's Soccer team cruised to a 2-0 season opening victory against Sarah Lawrence at Gordon Field.
 
Saturday's win moves Vassar to 1-0 on the season and gives it three shutout victories in as many outings against Sarah Lawrence in the all-time series.
 
How It Happened
  • All the scoring took place in the opening stanza with McGrath scoring twice just over six minutes apart.
  • The eventual game winning goal came in the 19th minute when McGrath tucked home a rebound off an initial shot from Liv Ivie (Agoura Hills, CA). Jessica Bowman (Larchmont, MY) started the play just outside the box with the marker giving Vassar a 1-0 lead at the 18:48 mark of the first half.
  • In the 26th minute, McGrath struck again, finishing off a restart off the foot of Cecelia Wager (Brookline, MA). Wager served a free kick into the box that McGrath headed home at 25:02 to finish off the scoring in the game.
  • The Brewers dominated the opening 45 minutes, heading into halftime with a two-goal advantage and a 21-1 advantage in shots.
  • Vassar took four of the five corner kicks prior to halftime.
  • Sarah Lawrence keeper, Bella Vaca, was forced to make seven saves prior to the intermission on Saturday.
  • Vassar unleashed 11 more shots after halftime, but was unable to find the back of the net in the second frame.
  • The Brewers closed the half with an 11-1 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Vaca turned aside three more shots in the second half and the Gryphons made a team save to keep the Brewers off the board.
 
For The Brewers
  • McGrath scored her first two goals of the season and tallied her third career game winning goal. McGrath closed out the victory with five shots for the Brewers.
  • Ivie and Bowman assisted on McGrath's first goal with Ivie recording her third career helper and Bowman picking up her fifth helper as a Brewer.
  • Wager recorded her first assist of the season and notched her seventh career point for Vassar.
  • First Year Caroline Sheehan (Springfield, IL) led Vassar with six shots on Saturday.
  • Lucy Hart (Portland, ME) and Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) each unleashed three shots in the contest.
  • Sophomore Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) earned the shutout on Saturday without having to make a save against the Gryphons.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Viktoria Balbin recorded a pair of shots for Sarah Lawrence.
  • Vaca was busy on Saturday, turning aside 10 shots in the loss.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar controlled play through on Saturday, finishing with a 32-2 advantage in overall shots and a 13-0 edge in shots on target.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers by a 7-1 margin.
