Field Hockey Uses First Half Offensive Surge to Cruise to Season Opening Victory

The Brewers tally eight goals in the first half to coast to a 9-1 win in the season opener

Poughkeepsie, NY - Five different players scored their first career goal to help lead the Vassar College Field Hockey team to a 9-1 triumph over William Paterson in the season opener at Weinberg Field on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers open the season at 1-0 overall while the Pioneers begin the 2025 campaign at 0-1.

How It Happened
  • Vassar wasted little time scoring the first two goals of the season as junior Karina Hoffman scored the first goal of the year just two minutes into the game off an assist from sophomore Mackenzie Allen.
  • Sophomore Zoe Robinson cracked the scoring column for the first time this season just a minute and a half later on an assist from Hoffman.
  • Robinson scored her second goal of the contest with two minutes left in the opening period on a feed from sophomore Jessica Pawloski to make it 3-0 and senior Sofia Beseth's goal with 27 seconds remaining in the quarter put VC ahead 4-0 after one.
  • First year Sophia Jammar recorded her first collegiate goal to open the second half and added a second goal off a corner feed from first year Sydney Yu and sophomore Hannah Lees.
  • Lees buried her first career goal halfway into the second period off a rebound and first year Sierra Chow posted her first career goal on an assist from classmate Sophie Gonno just three minutes later.
  • The Pioneers scored the final goal of the half with about a minute and a half remaining on a tally from Kelsey Geurts on a pass from Ali Stoner.
  • First year Julia Morris closed the scoring for the Brewers in the final quarter for her first career goal on another assist from Hoffman.
For The Brewers
  • Hoffman finished the contest with a goal and two assists while Robinson and Jammar each tallied two goals.
  • Lees recorded her first career goal and assists along with Morris, Chow and Beseth all registering a goal.
  • Allen, Gono, Pawloski and Yu each chipped in an assist for Vassar and 10 different Brewers recorded two shots or more.
  • Junior Grace Wiley picked up the victory in goal as the junior posted three saves.
For The Pioneers
  • Geurts tallied a goal for William Paterson along with Stoner adding an assist and two shots on goal.
  • Grace Jenkins took the loss in goal as she made nine saves.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar outshot the Pioneers 28-4, including 18-4 in shots on goal.
  • The Brewers also held a 14-5 edge in penalty corners over William Paterson.
