#10 Vassar Routs #2 Springfield, Sweeps Russell Sage on Senior Day

Brewers will head to the UVC Championship on Friday to take on sixth-seeded Hobart

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #10 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with two sweeps as the Brewers routed #2 Springfield 25-22, 25-20. 25-23 before cruising to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 victory against Russell Sage in the nightcap. Vassar closes the regular season at 21-5 overall and will take on sixth-seeded Hobart in the quarterfinal round of the UVC Championship on Friday night at NYU.

First Set
  • Vassar earned a 6-3 lead following winners from seniors Gavin Akoto and Billy Fan along with kills from sophomores Walter Birnbaum and Armaan Desai.
  • Two kills each from Jake DesLauriers and Sam Levinson put Springfield ahead 9-8 before a 7-1 run from VC, led by three kills from Birnbaum and two from Fan, put the Brewers back on top 15-10.
  • The Pride responded with six straight points behind two aces from DesLauriers and kills from Carter Durivage, Dylan Mulvaney and Levinson.
  • Springfield kept its lead at 20-19 on a kill from Durivage before Vassar responded with a Fan kill and an ace from senior Payne Lounsbery to go ahead 22-20.
  • A kill from senior Tobias Clark and a Springfield service error clinched the set victory for Vassar.
Second Set
  • Both squads went back-and-forth in the beginning of the set as Vassar broke a 6-6 tie with a kill from Clark and another ace from Lounsbery.
  • The lead expanded to 17-10 after a Fan ace and blocks from Clark, Akoto and first year Henry Bonney.
  • Springfield rattled off eight straight points to go ahead 18-17 on back-to-back aces from Durivage.
  • VC used consecutive aces from Lounsbery to regain the lead at 21-19 and then scored the final four points of the set on two winners from Birnbaum.
Third Set
  • Vassar scored an early 7-4 lead on two kills from Desai and a block from Clark, Desai and Lounsbery.
  • Springfield battled back to take a 11-8 advantage on three kills from Durivage and one from DesLauriers.
  • The Pride advantage expanded to 19-13 behind an ace and kill from Levinson along with a kill each from Chris Rouleau and Durivage.
  • VC tallied five straight points behind winners from Clark, Birnbaum and Desai along with a Lounsbery ace to cut the lead to 19-18.
  • A kill from Fan and solo blocks from Fan and Akoto put Vassar in front 22-21 and the Brewers clinched the sweep after a Birnbaum ace and a Fan kill.
For The Brewers
  • Birnbaum led the way with 13 kills, two blocks, two digs and an ace while Fan registered nine kills and two blocks.
  • Clark added six kills, three blocks and five digs along with Desai recording six kills and four blocks.
  • Akoto chipped in four kills and four blocks while Lounsbery finished with 29 assists, six aces, two blocks and five digs.
  • Sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted five digs.
For The Pride
  • Durivage garnered 12 kills, two aces and four digs while DesLauriers tallied 11 winners, two aces and five digs.
  • Levinson recorded nine winners and six digs along with Rouleau adding three kills.
  • Mulvaney handed out a match-high 31 assists and Ricardo Ortiz lifted five digs.

First Set
  • Vassar raced out to a 9-3 lead following two kills each from Akoto and junior James Zuckerman along with a block from first year Stuart Dow, Fan and Lounsbery.
  • Sage cut the lead down to 9-7 after three kills from John Lindheimer and an ace from Dylan Fox.
  • The Brewers lead grew back to 16-10 on a kill from Akoto and an ace from first year Petar Miocinovic.
  • Blocks from Dow, Akoto and Lounsbery increased the advantage to 20-12 before the Gators got within 23-18 on a kill from Anthony Guetti and a block from Guetti and Confidence Burrowes.
  • A kill from Zuckerman and a Sage service error gave Vassar the set win.
Second Set
  • The Brewers tallied a 7-4 lead behind two kills from Akoto and one winner from Zuckerman.
  • Junior Casey McMenamin's winner pushed VC ahead 13-9 and three straight winners from Miocinovic expanded the lead to 17-13.
  • A kill from Evan Devine and a block from Guetti, Devine and Lindheimer reduced the Vassar lead to 22-20.
  • VC took the final three points of the set, led by a block by McMenamin and Dow to take the set victory.
Third Set
  • VC scored a 8-4 advantage in the third set after kills from Miocinovic, Akoto and Birnbaum along with a block from Dow and Miocinovic.
  • The Brewers pushed the lead to 13-7, propelled by kills from Akoto, Dow and sophomore Parker Schoenl.
  • Blocks from Dow, Schoenl and Miocinovic expanded the advantage to 19-12 until the Gators used a kill from Burrowes and a block from Burrowes and Lindheimer to get within 22-18.
  • A kill from Zuckerman and a block from Dow and Miocinovic helped seal the Senior Day sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Akoto finished with eight kills, two blocks and three digs while Zuckerman added eight winners and a block.
  • Miocinovic tallied seven kills, three blocks and four digs along with Dow registering four kills and eight blocks.
  • McMenamin scored two kills and five digs while Schoenl added two kills, 17 assists and three digs.
For The Gators
  • Spencer Cooper garnered six winners and three digs while Devine added five kills and two blocks.
  • Fox tallied four kills, two aces and eight digs along with Lindheimer finishing with four kills, three blocks and eight digs.
  • Burrowes added three winners and three blocks while Guetti recorded 20 assists, three blocks and four digs.
  • Wylkins Occelin lifted seven digs.
