Brewers’ Comeback Falls Just Short In Senior Day Loss To RPI

Mulcahy leads team with three points

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team closed a back-to-back conference weekend on Saturday with a tight 11-10 Senior Day loss to visiting RPI Saturday afternoon. Senior Reilly Mulcahy (Arlington, VA) led the scoring attack for the Brewers with three points on the day.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to 9-4 overall and back to the .500 mark in league play at 4-4. RPI improves its standing to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in league action.
 
Prior to Saturday's contest, the Brewers recognized the members of the senior class: Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ), Kali Ringler (North Andover, MA), Julia Lawless (Valley Stream, NY), Faith Kim (Burnsville, MN), Elizabeth Kendrick (Big Sky, MT), Emily Stoff (Lambertville, NJ), Mulcahy, Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) and Emma Torkelson.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar never led in the contest after RPI scored the first two goals of the game in the late stages of the first quarter.
  • The Brewers got on the board at the 3:28 mark of the opening stanza when Kendrick finished off a feed from Pheobe Florance (Oakland, CA) to bring Vassar to within 2-1 heading to the second stanza.
  • RPI outscored Vassar 5-2 in the second frame, scoring four of the first five goals of the quarter.
  • Following an Amelia Poirier (Atherton, CA) marker cut the deficit to 4-2, RPI got goals from Emily Speck and Ella Graf to regain a 6-2 lead.
  • Mulcahy scored with the player-advantage to bring Vassar to within three goals, but a Speck tally in the closing seconds of the quarter sent the Engineers to the intermission leading 7-3.
  • The two sides split six goals in the third frame with Vassar getting back-to-back goals from Sigrid Fredlund and Logan Skuro (Chappaqua, NY) to pull to within 8-5 with 10:39 left in the period.
  • RPI answered with consecutive goals before a Skuro marker with just over five minutes left in the stanza made the score 10-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • After RPI opened the fourth quarter scoring with a Lisa Boehmer marker to make the score 11-6, Vassar mounted a comeback that featured four goals over the final 12:08 of regulation.
  • Siena Wong (Scotts Valley, CA) opened the scoring run with 12:08 left and Mulcahy brought the Brewers to within two goals with 7:28 remaining in regulation.
  • Poirier potted her second of the game with 7:03 left in the final frame ahead of a Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) goal with the player-advantage that made the score 11-10 with 3:22 left.
  • Vassar won the ensuing draw control, but turned the ball over.
  • MacMullen turned aside a free-position shot with 1:19 left and Emelia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA) had a shot miss wide on the near side in the closing seconds to finish off the contest.  
 
For The Brewers
  • Mulcahy scored twice and assisted on a third goal while adding a caused turnover and a groundball.
  • Skuro and Poirier each scored twice with Poirier adding a pair of draw controls.
  • Fredlund posted a goal and an assist for the Brewers.
  • DiLiberto won a team-high eight draw controls and added a groundball.
  • Catherine Peacock (Stockton, NJ) won seven draws and forced a turnover.
  • Megan Sweeney (Orlando, FL) caused a turnover and led the team with three groundballs.
  • MacMullen suffered the loss in goal, making seven saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Engineers
  • Audrey Silverman netted a hat trick and totaled four points.
  • Ella Graf scored twice and recorded an assist.
  • Ava Gilardone won four draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers.
  • Sofia Cedrone led the way with four groundballs.
  • Jenny Canfield picked up the win in goal with 10 saves for RPI.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game with a slim 28-26 advantage in shots, including a 20-18 edge in shots on goal.
  • Vassar dominated draw controls, 19-6.
  • Groundballs went to the Engineers, 21-9.
  • RPI finished a perfect 19-for-19 in clears.
