Men’s Lacrosse Drops Senior Day Decision To Visiting Union

Rufa totals four points in final home game

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team closed out the home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 16-11 loss to Union on Senior Day. In his final home game, senior Jack Rufa (New Milford, CT) led the Brewers' scoring attack with a hat trick and four points.
 
Saturday's defeat drops Vassar to 5-9 overall on the season and 0-6 in Liberty League play, with Union moving to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in conference competition.
 
Prior to face-off on Saturday, the Brewers honored Kieran Chai-Onn (Rockville, MD), Shane O'Hara (Warrenton, VA), Rufa, Henry Richard (Pepperell, MA), Matteo Roman (Arlington, VA), Drew Quinn (Garden City, NY), Drew Amirsakis (Darien, CT), Andrew Halesworth (Medfield, MA), Holden Anderson (Windham, ME) and assistant coach Kyle Loughlin on Senior Day.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar jumped in front 2-1 following goals from Baker Morton (West Hartford, VT) and Anderson Eads (Brightwaters, NY) with 3:04 left in the first quarter.
  • After Union knotted the score at 2-2, Vassar ripped off five straight goals to start the second period and open a 7-2 advantage.
  • The scoring run featured five different goal scorers with Eads keying the stretch with a goal and an assist for the Brewers.
  • Union came back with the final three goals of the first half, with Archie McEvoy assisting on two, to pull to within 7-5 heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, Union pushed its scoring run to eight goals with the first five tallies of the third frame.
  • Peter Kip and Walker Popko sparked the third quarter run for the Garnet Chargers with two goals apiece.
  • Vassar came back with back-to-back goals from Rufa and Tate Tinker (Lexington, KY) to pull to within 10-9 with 4:00 left in the third frame.
  • Union put the game away with three of the final four goals of the third quarter, outscoring Vassar 8-3 in the frame, and three of the four goals scored in the fourth quarter.
 
For The Brewers
  • Rufa led the way for the Brewers with a hat trick and four points.
  • Eads scored twice and assisted on a third goal.
  • O'Hara and Drew Mazzocco (Leesburg, VA) each posted a goal and an assist.
  • Chai-Onn forced a turnover and led the team with five groundballs.
  • Roman caused a miscue and collected a groundball.
  • Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) assisted on a goal and collected three groundballs.
  • Anderson won nine face-offs for the Brewers.
  • Quinn finished the day with 17 saves in goal and two groundballs.
 
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Kip and Popko each scored four times with Kip totaling five points. Each player collected four groundballs.
  • Mekhi Taylor scored three times for Union.
  • McEvoy assisted on two goals and scored one of his own to go along with four groundballs.
  • Patrick Reilly forced two turnovers and collected a pair of groundballs.
  • John Sula led the team with seven groundballs.
  • Luke McHugh won 11 face-offs and secured four groundballs.
  • Nick Lynch turned aside 12 shots in the win for Union.
 
Game Statistics
  • Union outshot Vassar 69-36 overall and 33-23 in shots on goal.
  • The Garnet Chargers dominated face-offs 20-9 and groundballs 48-24.
  • Union finished the day 19-for-20 in clears.
