Late Goals Send Vassar Past Clarkson In Season Finale

Mazzocco, Morton score late in regulation

Potsdam, NY – First Year Drew Mazzocco (Leesburg, VA) scored with just under four minutes left in regulation to tie the score and junior Baker Morton (West Hartford, VT) potted the game winner with 86 seconds left to send Vassar to a thrilling 11-10 Liberty League victory at Clarkson Saturday afternoon in the 2025 finale.
 
Saturday's victory ends Vassar's season at 6-9 overall and 1-6 against league rivals, while Clarkson rounds out the season at 8-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame following a Mazzocco marker and a player-up goal from Shane O'Hara (Warrenton, VA) with 5:37 left in the quarter.
  • The Golden Knights got the game evened with back-to-back tallies just over a half minute apart late in first period.
  • Vassar would go on to outscore Clarkson 2-1 in the final 2:13 of the frame, including an O'Hara tally with two seconds left, to send Vassar to the second stanza leading 4-3.
  • A tightly contested second quarter so each team find the back of the net just once heading into halftime.
  • Morton scored with 7:59 left before the break ahead of Clarkson's only goal of the frame, a Robert Fox tally, that made the score 5-4 in favor of Vassar at the break.
  • After scoring just four times in the opening 30 minutes, Clarkson erupted for five goals in the third quarter on Saturday.
  • Following Vassar goals from Jack Rufa (New Milford, CT) and O'Hara, Clarkson ripped off five straight goals to close the frame and open a 9-7 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Vassar responded in the fourth quarter with four of the five goals scored.
  • Goals from Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) and Tate Tinker (Lexington, KY) got the game even at 9-9 with 11:57 left.
  • Andrew Kearney pushed Clarkson back in front with a goal at the 9:36 mark of the final stanza.
  • Trailing by a goal, Mazzocco scored his second goal of the game with 3:46 left, finishing off a feed from Jordan Roesch (San Diego, CA), to even the score at 10-10.
  • With the game tied with inside of two minutes left to play, Morton converted an unassisted goal with 1:26 left for what proved to be the game winner.
  • Clarkson had a final attempt in the closing seconds that sailed wide.
 
For The Brewers
  • O'Hara closed out the season with a four-goal performance, finishing the year with a team-high 24 tallies. O'Hara finished off the day with four groundballs for the Brewers.
  • Mazzocco also totaled four points, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals, to go along with three groundballs.
  • Morton found the back of the net twice, including the game winner.
  • Rufa and Tinker each recorded a goal and an assist with Rufa securing two groundballs.
  • Dan Bader (Forestdale, MA) forced two turnovers and collected three groundballs.
  • Hayden Sofield (Long Beach, NY) caused a pair of turnovers.
  • Holden Anderson (Windham, ME) won 13 face-offs for the Brewers and led the team with nine groundballs.
  • Drew Quinn (Garden City, NY) picked up the win in goal with 12 saves and three groundballs.
 
For The Golden Knights
  • Ethan Hopkins and Sam Mancabelli each finished with two goals and an assist.
  • Connor Matthews scored twice.
  • Fox posted a goal and two assists to go along with two groundballs.
  • Jack Garvey caused six turnovers and secured five groundballs.
  • Matt Szwagulinski forced two miscues, scored a goal and collected a game-high 10 groundballs.
  • Alex Seiler was one of three players to win as many as three face-offs, going 4-for-9, with three groundballs.
  • Griffin Emerson finished with six saves in goal covering nearly 38 minutes of work.

  • Clarkson finished the game with a 39-34 advantage in overall shots and a 22-20 edge in shots on goal.
