Baseball Holds Off Late Surge for Road Conference Victory Over RPI

Brewers earn third conference win of the season, posted double digit runs for the second straight game

Troy, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team used a fast start with 10 runs in the first innings and held off a late RPI surge behind the relief pitching efforts of junior Cade Terada-Herzer and senior Luke Barrientos to take a 11-9 victory in the opening game of the three-game series with the Engineers. Vassar's record improves to 11-14 overall and 3-6 in Liberty League play while the Engineers fall to 18-11 and 6-5 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • Vassar struck for a big inning in the top of the first as senior Birch Herring-Jackson led off with an infield single and moved to second on a walk of junior Jensen Bergman.
  • Junior Taison Jemison's RBI double knocked in Herring-Jackson followed by senior Marc Milano drawing a bases loaded walk to push Bergman across for the second run of the inning.
  • First year Kyle Donlon knocked in two runs on a single followed by a two-RBI single from senior Bradley Markind to make it 6-0 after a half inning.
  • RPI answered in the bottom half of the inning as Ayush Krishnappa drove in two runs on a single and Ian Oehlschlager scored on a VC throwing error to cut the deficit to 6-3.
  • Bergman and senior Luke Barrientos each singled to begin the second inning and senior Marc Milano plated Bergman on an opposite field RBI single to make it 7-3 VC.
  • The Engineers scratched out a run in the fourth after Jon Primerano stole home on a double steal attempt to cut the lead to 7-4.
  • Following three straight two-out singles from senior Ricardo Reyna, senior Daniel Laderman and Markind to load the bases, Herring-Jackson drew a walk to push Reyna across and Bergman came through with a two-RBI single through the left side to put the Brewers on top 10-4 in the fifth.
  • A RBI groundout from senior Daniel Laderman scored Milano in the sixth to put VC ahead 11-4.
  • The Engineers struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double from Oehlschlaeger, a RBI walk of Julian Scarpa, a two-RBI single from Walker Abdallah and a RBI single from Michael Lebenson cut the lead down to 11-9 after six.
  • The duo of Terada-Herzer and Barrientos combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to hold off RPI and collect Vassar's third conference victory of the season.
