#9 Men's Volleyball Sweeps King's (PA), Topped By #4 Stevens

Brewers take on #1 NYU on Wednesday in the UVC regular season finale

Hoboken, NJ - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team split a pair of matches on the road on Saturday as the Brewers triumphed 25-20, 25-10, 25-18 over King's (PA) before falling to #4 Stevens 24-26, 22-25, 18-25 in the nightcap. Vassar's record now sits at 19-4 overall heading into the final week of the regular season.

First Set
  • Vassar went behind 3-1 early before a kill each from sophomores Armaan Desai, Walter Birnbaum and first year Stuart Dow put the Brewers ahead 4-3.
  • The Monarchs pulled ahead 9-7 on back-to-back winners from Logan Doughtery and Gavin Gilhool.
  • VC responded with two kills from Birnbaum and a service ace from sophomore Parker Schoenl to take a 14-11 advantage.
  • King's got back within three at 20-17 on a Dougherty kill before the Brewers used two kills from first year Petar Miocinovic and two aces from senior Payne Lousnbery to take the set.
Second Set
  • VC went ahead 5-2 to start the set on two aces from Lounsbery and a kill from Miocinovic.
  • The lead expanded to 10-3 following two kills from senior Tobias Clark, one winner from junior Doug Chandler and a Miocinovic ace.
  • The Brewers lead ballooned to 16-5 after a kill and a block from Desai along with winners from Birnbaum and Clark.
  • Logan Place's kill got the Monarchs within 21-10 before kills from Miocinovic, sophomore Tucker Shearn and Chandler clinched the second set.
Third Set
  • King's took a 4-3 lead on a block and kill from Dougherty and an ace from Ben Maskiell.
  • Vassar answered with two aces from Dow and a kill each from Miocinovic, Dow and Birnbaum to go ahead 9-6.
  • The Monarchs battled back to go ahead 12-10 on a block from Dougherty and Greg Bosquet.
  • After a kill from Dougherty evened the set at 15, Vassar scored six of the next seven points behind two kills from Chandler and Miocinovic.
  • The Brewers took the set after a kill and a block from Shearn and the match-sealing kill from junior James Zuckerman.
For The Brewers
  • Miocinovic tallied a match-high 13 kills and four digs along with Birnbaum adding eight kills and three digs.
  • Clark recorded seven kills, Chandler added five winners and Zuckerman tallied four kills.
  • Desai registered four kills, a block and an ace while Dow finished with four kills and three aces.
  • Schoenl recorded 19 assists, four aces and five digs along with Lounsbery tallying 17 assists, four aces and five digs.
For The Monarchs
  • Dougherty led the way with nine kills and two blocks while Shawn Hill chipped in three kills.
  • Gihool recorded two winners while Maskiell registered 14 assists and five digs.

First Set
  • Neither team gained a big lead in the early going as the Brewers went ahead 11-0 after kills from Desai and Birnbaum.
  • Stevens regained the lead at 13-11 after two solo blocks from Joshua Levandoske and a kill from Alex Olcott.
  • Vassar battled back to even the set at 17 on a kill from first year Henry Bonney and pulled ahead 18-17 on a solo block from Desai.
  • Lounsbery's ace put the Brewers ahead 22-20 until a kill from Levandoske and a block from Tyler Hoke and Sebastian Huke pulled Stevens ahead 23-22.
  • Senior Billy Fan buried a kill to even the set at 24 all but the Ducks used a kill from Olcott and a block from Olcott and Esteban Schmitt to take the opening set.
Second Set
  • Vassar scored the first four points of the first set on two aces from Schoenl and blocks from Desai, Fan and Zuckerman.
  • Back-to-back kills from Fan and Akoto put the Brewers ahead 11-9 before Stevens rattled off five straight points to go ahead 13-11.
  • Kills from Huyke and Koby Sherman put Stevens on top 17-13 but the Brewers battled back to within 20-17 on a Fan kill.
  • Desai's ace cut the lead down to 22-20 until kills from Hoke and Sherman gave the Ducks a second set win.
Third Set
  • Vassar earned a 6-3 lead on three kills from Birnbaum along with a winner each from Zuckerman and Fan.
  • Stevens responded to take a 8-7 lead on kills from Sherman and Huyke until VC took a 12-11 lead after two kills from Birnbaum and one from Fan.
  • The Ducks scored nine of the next 10 points, led by blocks from Hoke, Sherman and Levandoske to go ahead 20-13.
  • A block from Bonney and Desai cut the deficit to 23-17 but kills from Sherman and Olcott completed the sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Birnbaum finished with 12 kills and four digs while Fan tallied eight winners and eight digs.
  • Desai recorded five kills and four blocks along with senior Gavin Akoto adding three kills.
  • Schoenl registered 14 assists, two aces and seven digs while Lounsbery tallied 12 assists, two aces and four digs.
  • Shearn lifted five digs.
For The Ducks
  • Sherman recorded 12 kills and six digs along with Olcott registering 11 kills and eight digs.
  • Levandoske chipped in seven kills, four blocks and seven digs while Hoke added four kills and four blocks.
  • Huyke tallied three kills, 29 assists, two blocks and 10 digs along with Jesse Knuckles lifting five digs.
