Baseball Suffers Two Narrow Setbacks Against Union

VC and Union will close the series with a single game tomorrow

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team battled in two tight games in a doubleheader against conference foe Union on Friday as the Brewers fell in a 3-2 pitching duel in game one followed by a 6-5 setback in 10 innings in the nightcap. Vassar's record falls to 5-11 overall and 0-5 in Liberty League play while the Garnet Chargers improve to 13-6 and 2-0 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • Union scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning as Dylan Swarts singled home Caleb Miller followed by a two-RBI triple from AJ Cutler.
  • VC cracked the board first in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by senior Daniel Laderman to plate senior Birch Herring-Jackson.
  • Sophomore Noah Stockman blasted his first homer of the season to left field in the seventh to bring Vassar within a run.
For The Brewers For The Garnet Chargers
  • Nico Lambros tallied two hits and a run scored while Cutler knocked in two runs.
  • Swarts added a hit and a RBI along with Kyle Zaslaw, Dan Sheeran and Miller registered a hit.
  • Chris Suter earned the complete game victory and allowed eight hits, two runs, two walks and struck out five.
Game 2 - Union 6 VC 5 (10 inn.)

How It Happened
  • Vassar opened the scoring in the third as senior Michael Lee led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Herring-Jackson.
  • Union evened the game at one in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Lambros to score Sheeran.
  • The Garnet Chargers took a 3-1 lead in the fourth as Sam Strazza knocked in a run on a sac fly followed by Zaslaw coming across to score following a pickoff.
  • VC cut the lead in half in the fifth on a RBI single from Reyna to score senior Daniel Laderman.
  • Union's advantage grew to 5-2 in the fifth on a RBI single from Strazza and a bases loaded walk of Noah Dicaprio.
  • Vassar pulled even at five in the seventh after Herring-Jackson came across to score on a wild pitch and Barrientos drove in Bergman with a single, which led to Jemison coming around to score on a fielding error.
  • The game was sent to extra innings as the Garnet Chargers walked it off in the 10th on a two-out RBI single from Lambros to score pinch-runner Danny Talacci.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Barrientos added two hits and a RBI.
  • Lee, Stockman, Laderman, Jemison and Reyna all tallied a hit along with Reyna and Herring-Jackson driving in a run.
  • Sophomore Grant Maryott started on the mound and took a no-decision after throwing 4.2 innings and allowing five hits, five runs, four walks and struck out one.
  • Senior Jack Blau entered in relief and threw 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the game tied.
  • Barrientos took the loss in relief as he went 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, one run, one walk and struck out one.
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Miller finished the day going 3-for-6 while Sheeran added two hits and a run scored.
  • Strazza and Lambros each recorded a hit and two RBI along with Dicaprio adding a hit and a RBI.
  • Jack Klein took a no-decision as he went the first 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, four walks and struck out three.
  • Swarts earned the win in relief as he threw three scoreless innnings, giving up just two hits, one walk and struck out three.

  • Both squads will return to Prentiss Field tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. for the final game of the series.
