Women’s Lacrosse Suffers First Loss Of The Season

Mulcahy scores twice; Peacock wins five draws

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team saw its six-game winning streak to open the season come to an end Saturday following an 11-6 Liberty League loss to visiting St. Lawerence. Senior Reilly Mulcahy (Arlington, VA) potted two goals and Catherine Peacock (Stockton, NJ) led the team with five draw controls.
 
Saturday's defeat drops Vassar to 6-1 overall on the season and to 1-1 in conference play, while the Saints improve to the .500 mark at 3-3 overall and 1-1 against Liberty League opponents.
 
How It Happened
  • After St. Lawrence jumped out to a 1-0 lead, Amelia Poirier (Atherton, CA) brought the Brewers even, finishing off a feed from Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) at the 3:48 mark of the opening stanza.
  • Following the Poirier tally, the Saints ran off five straight goals, including the first three of the second frame, to open a 6-1 lead.
  • Jessica LaPlaca sparked the scoring run with two goals and two helpers as the Saints moved in front by five goals with 7:01 left before halftime.
  • Vassar came back with consecutive goals from Emilia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA) and Burgess to pull to within 6-3 with just over four minutes left before halftime.
  • St. Lawrence got a player-up goal from LaPlaca in the final half minute of the second frame to carry a 7-3 advantage into the intermission.
  • Coming out of the break, the Saints extended their lead to 9-3 with goals from LaPlaca and Kelsey Roth in the first eight-and-half minutes of the third frame.
  • Vassar would score three of the next four goals to pull to within 10-6 with 5:04 left to play.
  • Mulcahy scored twice in the run and Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) sliced the deficit to four with just over five minutes left in the contest.
  • St. Lawrence closed out the scoring in the game and took the final five-goal decision with a Neve Ley goal with the player-advantage with 2:53 left.
 
For The Brewers
  • Mulcahy scored twice in the game, moving her season total in markers to 13, and added a caused turnover.
  • DiLiberto and Burgess each finished with a goal and an assist with DiLiberto rounding out the game with two groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control.
  • Poirier closed the day with a goal, groundball and caused turnover.
  • Peacock led the team with five draw controls and contributed two groundballs and three caused turnovers.
  • Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ) suffered the loss in goal with six saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Saints
  • LaPlace led the way with four goals and six points to go along with a groundball and a draw control.
  • Ley scored four times and secured four draw controls.
  • Kelsey Roth finished with two goals.
  • Ava O'Rourke closed the day with a goal and an assist.
  • Brigitte Gable finished the day with three caused turnovers and six groundballs.
  • Zoe Froimovitz picked up the win in goal with eight stops.

  • St. Lawrence held slim advantages in overall shots, 27-26, and shots on goal, 17-14.
  • Groundballs went to the Saints by a 19-18 margin.
