Baseball Swept by Skidmore in Home Opener

Vassar will return to action on Wednesday on the road against Old Westbury

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team opened its home schedule on Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Field as the Brewers dropped two conference games to Skidmore, falling 16-5 in game one and falling 8-4 in game two of the twinbill. Vassar's record drops to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in Liberty League play while the Thoroughbreds improve to 9-5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

Game 1 - Skidmore 16 Vassar 5 (7 inn.)

How It Happened
  • Vassar got on the board first in the bottom half of the first as senior Birch Herring-Jackson led off with a single to right and was scored on a RBI single from junior Taison Jemison.
  • Skidmore put four runs up in the third inning as Sam Kornet blasted a grand slam to left center field to put the Thoroughbreds ahead 4-1.
  • The Thoroughbreds posted a 10 run inning in the fourth as Trey Bourque doubled home two rus along with Eddie Galvao and EJ Stefanelli each producing two-RBI singles.
  • Vassar responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run homer from senior Ricardo Reyna to score senior Bradley Markind and first year Quillan Oberto.
  • Ewen Donald uncorked a homer to right field to score two runs in the fifth to make it 16-4 for Skidmore.
  • Vassar scratched out one run in the sixth on a RBI triple from junior Jensen Bergman.
For The Brewers
  • Reyna finished 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs batted in along with Markind recording two hits.
  • Bergman and Jemison each collected a hit and a RBI while Herring-Jackson had a hit and two runs scored.
  • Senior Michael Lee and Oberto also each added a hit.
  • Sophomore Grant Maryott took the loss as he went 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, 10 runs, seven walks and struck out three.
  • Sophomore Patrick Mill turned in 3.1 innings of relief, giving up just three hits and two runs.
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Kornet posted a 2-for-3 day with four RBI and three runs scored while Bourque added two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Stefanelli and Galvao each registered a hit and two runs batted in along with Donald knocking in two runs.
  • Chase Siegel earned the win as he tossed five innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, one walk and struck out seven.
  • Charles Modlin turned in two innings of relief and gave up two hits, one run and struck out two.
Game 2 - Skidmore 8 Vassar 4

How It Happened
  • Skidmore put the first run on the board in the first inning on a RBI single from Kornet to plate Bourque.
  • The Thoroughbreds scratched out a run in the second on a double steal attempt where Mac Cady scored following a caught stealing at second base.
  • In the fourth, Landon Schwartzman came across to score on a wild pitch and an infield RBI single from Bourque put Skidmore ahead 4-0.
  • VC cut the lead in half in the fifth as Bergman lifted a two-run homer to right field to score senior Finn Kaplan-Moore to make it 4-2.
  • Skidmore added an unearned run in the sixth on a passed ball before Vassar got it back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single from Markind.
  • The Brewers cut the lead down to one in the seventh on a RBI single from first year Miller Young to chase Reyna home.
  • Skidmore increased the lead to 8-4 in the eight following a two-RBI single from Donald, who later came across to score on a VC error.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman registered a two-hit game, with a double and a homer, and knocked in two runs.
  • Senior Marc Milano and sophomore Noah Stockman collected two hits apiece along with Young and Markind recording a hit and a run batted in.
  • First year Zach Berner took the loss as he went the first two innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and struck out two.
  • Sophomore Sage Roy-Burman threw three strong innings of relief, giving up just one hit, one run (zero earned), three walks and struck out six.
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Donald posted a 3-for-5 game with two runs batted in while Bourque and Kornet each tallied two hits and a RBI.
  • Quinn McDonald recorded two hits and a runs scored while Zachary Leiderman, Nate Vandersea and Schwartzman all added a hit.
  • Grayden Harris picked up the win as he went 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, one walk and struck out five.
  • Jack Collins tossed 2.2 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, one run (zero earned) and struck out two.
