Baseball Drops Conference Opener to Skidmore

Vassar will play its home opener tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Thoroughbreds at 12:00

Saratoga Springs, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team opened Liberty League play on the road on Friday afternoon as the Brewers fell 19-8Ā in seven innings to Skidmore in the first of a three-game series. Vassar's record drops to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference action while the Thoroughbreds improve to 7-4-2 on the season and 1-0 in Liberty League matchups.

How It Happened
  • Vassar struck first in its first at-bat as junior Jensen Bergman doubled to the opposite field and junior Taison Jemison blasted a two-out two-run homer to left field to put the Brewers ahead 2-0 early.
  • Skidmore answered with threeĀ runs in the bottom half of the first following a two-out two-RBI single from Ewen Donald and a bases-loaded walk of Quinn McDonald.
  • The Thoroughbreds put up a crooked number in the second after a RBI double from Zachary Leiderman, a RBI single from Donald and a RBI fielder's choice from Landon Schwartzman.
  • A two-RBI single from McDonald gave Skidmore an 8-2 lead after two innings.
  • Skidmore's lead expanded to 11-2 on a two-run home run from LeidermanĀ and Sam Kornet came across to scored on a wild pitch in the third.
  • VC tallied a run in the fourth as first year Miller Young reached on an error and then scored on a RBI single from senior Ricardo Reyna.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth, Skidmore tacked on sevenĀ runs from RBI hits from Leiderman, Kornet, McDonald and Mac Cady.
  • Vassar put up five runs in the sixth as seniors Birch Herring-Jackson and Bradley Markind each singled and senior Marc Milano drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.
  • Markind came across to score on a Skidmore error and first year Dash Edwards blasted his first collegiate home run with a grand slam to left field to make it 18-8.
For The Brewers
  • Edwards finished the game going 2-for-4 with his first career home run, four runs batted in and a run scored.
  • Jemison went 2-for-2 on the day, including his second career homer, and drove in two runs and also was hit by a pitch.
  • Reyna tallied a hit and a run batted in along with Bergman, Young and Markind registering a hit and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Will Darrell suffered the loss after going two innings and allowing seven hits, eight runs (five earned), three walks and struck out three.
  • Young threw two hitless innings of relief in his first collegiate appearance on the mound for the Brewers.
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Donald recorded a 4-for-5Ā day with three RBI and three runs scored along with Leiderman going 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored.
  • McDonald added a 2-for-2 game with five runs batted in while Trey Bourque and Kornet both registered two hits and three runs scored.
  • Quinn HocomĀ picked up the win as he threw five innings, giving up six hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and struck out nine.

  • The two teams will square off tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Prentiss Field.
