Baseball Falls Just Short Against Fredonia in Final Game of RussMatt Invitational

Vassar will begin the conference schedule on Friday against Skidmore

Davenport, FL - The Vassar College Baseball team rallied in the ninth inning but couldn't push the tying run across as the Brewers dropped the final game of the RussMatt Invitational against Fredonia, 8-7, on Tuesday morning. Vassar finishes the Florida trip at 5-5 overall while Fredonia improves to 5-1 on the season.

How It Happened
  • Vassar scored two early runs in the first inning as senior Birch Herring-Jackson was hit by a pitch and then stole second before coming across to score on a RBI single from junior Jensen Bergman.
  • Bergman later scored following a Fredonia throwing error to give VC an early 2-0 lead.
  • Fredonia cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning following a single from Cole Schraufsetter before stealing second and being knocked in on a RBI single from Christian Cabrera.
  • The Brewers pushed three runs across in the third after Bergman led off with a single and junior Taison Jemison doubled down the right field line to chase Bergman home.
  • Jemison later scored on a Fredonia throwing error and first year Miller Young scored off a fielder's choice on a ball put in play by senior Michael Lee.
  • The Blue Devils answered with a big inning in the sixth as two-RBI singles from Domenic Hickok and Andrew Tucker cut the lead to 6-5.
  • Fredonia evened the score at six in the sixth on a RBI single from Kyle Tedford with one out.
  • The Blue Devils took the lead in the bottom of the eighth as Brady Ventura scored on a strikeout and Tedford knocked in another run with a single to put Fredonia on top 8-6.
  • Vassar rallied for a run in the ninth following a double from first year Miller Young and a RBI triple from first year Dash Edwards but the Brewers couldn't push the tying run across in the ninth.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman tallied a 3-for-5 day with three runs scored and a run batted in along with Young garnering two hits and two runs scored.
  • Edwards recorded a triple and a RBI while Jemison registered a double, a run scored and a run batted in.
  • First year Zach Berner took a no decision on the mound as he went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk and struck out one.
  • Junior Cade Terada-Herzer took the loss in relief as he threw 2.2 innings, giving up four hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out three.
For The Blue Devils
  • Hickok and Tedford both finished with two hits and two RBI along with Tucker knocking in two runs.
  • Alex Ahlstrom tallied two hits while Schraufsetter, Christian Pagano and Vinny Grazioplene each added a hit.
  • Joe Tobia started on the mound and went three innings, allowing four hits, five runs (four earned) and struck out three.
  • Nick Syposs tossed 4.1 strong innings in relief as he gave up just one hit, one run (zero earned), one walk and struck out two.
  • Connor Burkestone earned the win as he threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, one run and struck out three.

  • Vassar will begin Liberty League play this weekend as the Brewers will take on Skidmore in a three-game set beginning on Friday at Skidmore at 3:30 p.m.
  • Fredonia will take on Wisconsin-Eau Claire tomorrow morning in Florida.
