Auburndale, FL - Sophomore Will Darrell tossed a strong 5.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run along with senior Luke Barrientos going 2-for-4 and earning the save on the mound to lead the Vassar College Baseball team to a 5-2 win over Fitchburg State at the RussMatt Invitational. Vassar's record improves to 4-3 overall while the Falcons drop to 4-6 on the season.

How It Happened
  • Vassar took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning following a double down the third base line from sophomore Noah Stockman, who was chased home on a RBI single to right center from senior Bradley Markind.
  • The Brewers added a second run in the fourth as Stockman drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a walk to Markind. Senior Luke Barrientos came through with a two-out RBI double to left center to make it 2-0.
  • The VC lead doubled in the fifth after junior Jensen Bergman drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Senior Marc Milano was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a wild pitch with no outs.
  • First year Dash Edwards plated Bergman on a RBI groundout and Milano came across to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
  • Fitchburg scratched out a run in the sixth as Jacob Hurrell drew a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Liam Currier came across to scored on an error. The Falcons brought the tying run to the plate in the inning but junior Cade Terada-Herzer entered with two outs and got a strikeout looking to end the frame.
  • The Falcons cut the lead to 4-2 in the seventh on a two-out RBI single from Nolan Hills but Terada-Herzer was able to strand the bases loaded for the second straight inning with a strikeout.
  • Once again, Fitchburg State threatened in the eighth as the Falcons brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out but senior Jack Blau stranded the runners with a big strikeout and induced a flyout to end the threat.
  • VC added a key insurance run in the top of the ninth following a leadoff double from Barrientos, who was pushed to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Birch Herring-Jackson. Barrientos then scored on a sacrifice fly from Bergman to go ahead 5-2.
For The Brewers
  • Markind went 2-for-4 with a run batted in along with Bergman going 2-for-3 with a RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored.
  • Stockman tallied a double and two runs scored while seniors Daniel Laderman and Ricardo Reyna each added a hit.
  • Barrientos finished going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored and tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.
  • Darrell earned his first victory of the season on the mound as he went 5.2 innings, allowing three hits, one run (zero earned), two walks and struck out five.
