Baseball Edges Oneonta, 3-2

Five pitchers scatter six hits and two runs over nine innings

Winter Haven, FL - Five pitchers scattered six hits and two runs over nine innings as the Vassar College Baseball team outdueled Oneonta, 3-2, at the RussMatt Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park. The Brewers improve to 3-3 overall on the season while Oneonta falls to 4-5 on the season.

How It Happened
  • Oneonta scratched out a run in the top of the first as Josh Gilkey singled with one out and came around to score on a fielding error.
  • Vassar answered in the bottom half of the inning as junior Jensen Bergman was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a RBI double from senior Daniel Laderman. The Brewers took the lead on a RBI single from sophomore Noah Stockman with two outs to go ahead 2-1.
  • The Brewers added a run in the third following a leadoff single from senior Birch Herring-Jackson and Laderman cashed in his second RBI of the game on a single down the third base line.
  • Oneonta trimmed the lead to one in the fifth as Nick Jacoby laced a leadoff triple to left center and was scored on a sacrifice fly from Gilkey.
  • The trio of junior Danny Wellner, senior Collin Donnelly and senior Jack Blau held the Red Dragons off the board in the final four innings to take the 3-2 victory.
For The Brewers
  • Laderman recorded two hits, including a double, and knocked in two runs while Stockman added a hit and a run batted in.
  • Herring-Jackson notched a hit and a run scored and Bergman reached base twice, stole two bases and scored a run.
  • Wellner earned the victory over three innings of relief as he gave up three hits, one run and struck out two.
  • Sophomore Patrick Mill started on the mound and went two innings, allowing just one unearned run, while senior Juan Mercado tossed two scoreless innings.
  • Donnelly pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Blau picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth, where he struck out all three hitters he faced.
For The Red Dragons
  • Ryan Cronin finished 2-for-4 while Gilkey tallied a hit, a run scored and a run batted in.
  • Jacoby recorded a triple and a run scored while Joey Dwyer and Logan Hutter each added a hit.
  • James Torres took the tough luck loss as he went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, four walks and struck out five.
  • Tom Roefaro tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out three.
