Women’s Lacrosse Runs Season Opening Winning Streak To Five Games

Brewers off to best start since 2013

Panama City Beach, FL – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team closed out play in the Spring Fling Tournament on Wednesday with a 19-5 victory over Oneonta, running its winning streak to five games to begin the season. 14 Vassar players recorded at least one point in the contest, led by six from junior Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL).
 
At 5-0 on the season, Vassar has matched its best start to a season since winning its first five contests to open the 2013 campaign. Oneonta remains winless on the season and falls to 0-4.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead following goals from Phoebe Florance (Oakland, CA) and Billings just 1:48 into the contest.
  • After an Oneonta goal made the score 2-1, Vassar scored three straight, with Billings assisting on two of the tallies, to pull in front 5-1.
  • Cassidy Moore scored for the Red Dragons in the final minute to pull Oneonta to within 5-2 through 15 minutes of play.
  • For the second straight day, Vassar broke the game open in the second frame. On Tuesday the Brewers outscored Fitchburg State 9-1 in the second quarter and on Wednesday blanked Oneonta, scoring the only six goals of the stanza.
  • Florance and Emilia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA) sparked the second quarter surge with a goal and an assist apiece.
  • Reilly Mulcahy (Arlington, VA), Billings, Siena Wong (Scotts Valley, CA) and Emily Stoff (Lambertville, NJ) added second quarter tallies as the Brewers took an 11-2 advantage into the intermission.
  • The Brewers outscored the Red Dragons 8-3 after halftime to close out the victory.
  • DiLiberto opened the third period scoring, pushing Vassar in front 12-2 just 66 seconds after the break.
  • Oneonta scored consecutive goals for the only time of the game in the third frame, before Vassar answered with the last three goals of the period, including two from Billings, to take a 15-4 lead into the final stanza.
  • The Brewers scored four of the five goals in the final frame, including a three-goal run with markers from Megan Sweeney (Orlando, FL), Kali Ringler (North Andover, MA) and Sigrid Fredlund (Seattle, WA).
  • Catherine Peacock (Stockton, NJ) closed out the scoring in the closing seconds to give Vassar the final 15-goal decision.
 
For The Brewers
  • Billings closed a strong tournament with six points, scoring four times and assisting on two goals. Billings added a pair of draw controls for the Brewers.
  • DiLiberto finished the win with a hat trick and four points and matched the team-high with four draw controls.
  • Mulcahy continued a strong start to the season with two goals and two assists while joining DiLIberto with a team-high four draw controls.
  • Florance contributed two goals and an assist to the victory and added a groundball.
  • Fredlund scored a pair of goals for the Brewers.
  • First Year Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) assisted on two goals, pushing her season point total to 16.
  • Emily Kallman (Jamestown, RI) won a trio of draw controls for the Brewers.
  • Sweeney added a goal, draw control and a groundball.
  • Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ) earned the win in goal, stopping two shots in the first half.
  • Maddie Busam (Summit, NJ) played the second half and turned aside three shots for the Brewers.
 
For The Red Dragons
  • Moore scored twice for Oneonta and won a pair of draw controls.
  • Angelina Weinert assisted on two goals and won a draw.
  • Mason Benvenuto finished with a groundball, draw control and a caused turnover.
  • Julia Hawkins suffered the loss in goal, making nine saves for Oneota.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar closed the day with a convincing 32-12 advantage in overall shots, including a 28-10 edge in shots on goal.
  • Groundballs went to the Brewers by a 6-2 margin.
  • The Brewers won the draw control battle, 17-9.
  • Vassar was a perfect 15-for-15 in clears.
  • Oneonta finished the day 10-for-14 in clearing chances.
