Brewers off to best start since 2020

Panama City Beach, FL – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team scored its fourth win to open the season on Tuesday, posting an impressive 16-2 win against Fitchburg State to begin play in the Spring Fing Tournament. A trio of Brewers notched three points in the game with Amelia Poirier (Atherton, CA) and Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) each recording a hat trick.
 
Tuesday's win moves Vassar to 4-0 on the season, the program's best start since it won four straight games to open the 2020 season before the campaign was halted due to Covid. Fitchburg State suffers its fifth loss in as many outings to begin the 2025 season.
 
How It Happened
  • After falling behind 1-0 just 28 seconds into the game, Vassar scored the final three goals of the opening stanza.
  • Siena Wong (Scotts Valley, CA) brought Vassar even at 1-1 with 2:09 left in the first period and Poirier and Reilly Mulcahy (Arlington, VA) scored in the final 70 seconds of the quarter to give Vassar a 3-1 lead.
  • The Brewers broke the game open in the second frame, outscoring the Falcons 9-1 to take a 12-2 lead into halftime.
  • Vassar scored the first seven goals of the frame, including two from Poirier, to open a 10-1 lead with 5:56 left before the break.
  • After an Autumn Tibbetts marker for the Falcons, Billings and Annabelle Tracy (Warwick, RI) scored late in the quarter to send Vassar into the intermission with a 10-goal advantage.
  • Vassar blanked Fitchburg State in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 4-0 after halftime.
  • Emily Kallman (Jamestown, RI) opened the third period scoring with Billings completing the hat trick with 3:44 left in the quarter.
  • First Year Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) scored her team leading 14th goal of the season to finish off the third quarter scoring.
  • Sophomore Sigrid Fredlund (Seattle, WA) accounted for the only goal of the fourth frame, recording her third point of the contest.
 
For The Brewers
  • Poirier finished the day with three goals, a groundball and a caused turnover.
  • Billings tallied three times for Vassar on three shots.
  • Fredlund rounded out the win with two goals and an assist while adding a caused turnover.
  • Mulcahy and Emilia DiLIberto (Allison Park, PA) each finished with a goal and an assist with DiLiberto winning four draw controls and Mulcahy adding a trio of draws.
  • Liz Lange (Upton, MA) recorded a caused turnover and a groundball for the Brewers.
  • Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ) earned the win in goal without having to make a save in 30 minutes.
  • Maddie Busam (Summit, NJ) made a trio of stops in just over 27 minutes of work.
  • Cassidy Schuchat (Hopewell Junction, NY) made two saves in nearly three minutes of action.
 
For The Falcons
  • Tibbetts scored both of the Falcons' goals and won a draw control.
  • Leah Faria assisted on a tally and added a draw control.
  • Jessica St. George won two draw controls.
  • Dakin Kovatch turned aside five shots in 30 minutes of work.
  • Elizabeth Smith made three saves in 30 minutes of action.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar closed the game with a 29-11 advantage in overall shots, including a 24-7 edge in shots on goal.
  • Groundballs in the game were even at 3-3.
  • Vassar finished with a 16-5 advantage in draw controls.
