Baseball Drops Twinbill to Husson

Bergman totals three hits in the doubleheader

Davenport, FL - The Vassar College Baseball team battled in a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday evening as the Brewers dropped a 9-1 contest in game one before falling in the middle innings, 5-4, in the nightcap. Vassar's record falls to 2-3 overall while the Eagles improve to 3-3 on the season.

Game 1 - Husson 9 VC 1 (7 inn.)

How It Happened
  • Neither team cracked the scoreboard until the top of the fourth when Husson's Matt Holmes lifted an opposite field home run followed by a RBI single from Tanner Evans and a bases loaded walk to Akira Warren to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
  • Husson tacked on a fourth run in the fifth inning on another homer from Holmes to right center.
  • Senior Birch Herring-Jackson got the Brewers on the board in the bottom of the fifth on his first career home run down the left field line.
  • The Eagles added four insurance runs in the seventh following a RBI single from Ryne Rametta, a sacrifice fly from Tyler Michaud and a two-RBI single from Jackson Curtis.
For The Brewers
  • Herring-Jackson blasted his first career homer while junior Jensen Bergman tallied two hits and a stolen base.
  • First year Dash Edwards recorded his first collegiate hit.
  • First year Zach Berner took the loss in his first collegiate start as he went 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two walks and struck out four.
  • Senior Juan Mercado tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
For The Eagles
  • Holmes went 2-for-4 (two homers) with two RBI and three runs scored along with Evans going 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • J. CurtisĀ added a hit and two runs batted in and Hunter Curtis recorded a hit and two runs scored.
  • Avery Lawrence earned the win, going five innings and allowing four hits, one run, one walk and struck out four.
  • Alex Smith picked up the save with two innings of scoreless relief.
Game 2 - Husson 5 Vassar 4 (7 inn.)

How It Happened
  • VC scored first in game two as Edwards led off the second inning with a double and was scored on a single from sophomore Noah Stockman.
  • Following a hit by pitch of senior Michael Lee and a sacrifice bunt from senior Bradley Markind, senior Finn Kaplan-Moore knocked Stockman in with a sacrifice fly.
  • Herring-Jackson plated the third run of the inning on a single to center.
  • Henry Lausier's RBI single in the bottom half of the secondĀ cut the lead to 3-1.
  • Husson trimmed the advantage to 3-2 in the third as Colin Marshall scored on an error.
  • The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a sacrifice fly from Marshall and a two-out two-RBI single from Warren to make it 5-3.
  • In the top half of the fifth, Bergman led off with a double and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Marc Milano.
  • Senior Daniel Laderman came through with a RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 5-4 but VC was unable to rally in the final innings.
For The Brewers
  • Laderman, Herring-Jackson and Stockman each finished with a hit and a RBI.
  • Bergman, Milano and Edwards each added a hit while Bergman and Edwards scored a run.
  • Junior Cade Terada-Herzer took the loss as he went three-plus innings, allowing three hits, four runs (two earned), one walk and struck out three.
  • Senior Luke Barrientos tossed three innings of relief, giving up one hits, one run (no earned), three walks and struck out four.
For The Eagles
  • Warren tallied a hit and two runs batted in along with Lausier knocking in a run with a hit.
  • H. Curtis and Cam Rendell each added a hit.
  • Ryan Penney started and went one-plus innings, allowing three hits, three runs and struck out one.
  • Jack Lano earned the win in relief after throwing 3.1 innings, giving up three hits, one run and struck out three.
  • Allen Wheaton picked up the save with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out five.

  • Vassar will return to the field at the RussMatt Invitational on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. against Oneonta.
  • Husson will take on Mitchell tomorrow afternoon.
