Offense Erupts In Home Win Over Hartford

Burgess tallies five times, Mulcahy totals six points

Poughkeepsie, NY – First Year Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) scored five times and senior Reilly Mulcahy (Arlington, VA) totaled six points as the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team won its third straight game to open the season with an impressive 21-9 win over Hartford Saturday afternoon.
 
The 3-0 start for the Brewers is the best start for the program since it won its first four games before Covid cancelled the remainder of the 2020 season. Hartford slips to 0-2 overall on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • After Hartford jumped to a 2-1 lead early in the first period, Vassar ripped off nine straight goals to open a 10-2 lead with 8:38 left before halftime.
  • Burgess sparked the run with four goals with Mulcahy helping on two tallies.
  • Hartford scored four straight goals to close to within 10-6 before the Brewers scored the final four goals of the first half to take a 14-6 lead into the intermission.
  • Mulcahy scored twice in the closing run, including with six seconds left in the second stanza, and Burgess added her fifth of the game with 3:42 left in the first half.
  • Vassar outscored Hartford 3-2 in the third frame to open a 17-8 lead and scored four of the five goals in the final frame.
  • First Year Maddie Kaltsas (MInnetrista, MN) scored two second half goals for the Brewers.
  • Emily Kallman (Jamestown, RI) added a pair of assists for Vassar after the break.
 
For The Brewers
  • Burgess posted her second straight five-goal game for the Brewers and added a draw control.
  • Mulcahy scored twice and assisted on four goals in the win, adding four groundballs, a groundball and a draw control.
  • Emilia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA), Siena Wong (Scotts Valley, CA) and Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) all finished with two goals and an assist.
  • Amelia Poirier (Atherton, CA) and Kaltsas each scored twice for the Brewers.
  • Kallman assisted on two goals and collected two groundballs.
  • Sloan Shade (Fort Lauderdale, FL) led the team with two caused turnovers and collected a groundball.
  • Poirier reached double-figures in draw controls for the second straight game, securing 12 against the Hawks.
  • DilIberto finished the win with five draws and a groundball.
  • Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ) finished with four saves in goal in just over 33 minutes of work.
  • Maddie Busam (Summit, NJ) made three stops in just over 17 minutes worth of work.
 
For The Hawks
  • Megan Smith led all players with six goals in the game and closed the day with six draw controls and four groundballs.
  • Laurel McIntosh scored twice and secure two draws.
  • Samantha Ciaglo led the team with six groundballs.
  • Mandi Rivard suffered the loss in goal with a 10 save effort.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished with a convincing 40-22 advantage in shots, including a 31-18 edge in shots on goal.
  • Groundballs went to the Brewers by a 23-18 margin.
  • The Brewers doubled-up the Hawks in draw controls 22-11.
  • Both teams were perfect in clears, with Hartford going 13-for-13 and Vassar finishing 16-for-16.
