Brewers Outlast Union In Overtime, 66-63

Trio of Brewers score in double-figures

Schenectady, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team improved to 4-0 in games decided in overtime on Saturday with a hard fought 66-63 road win at Union. Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) led three players in double-figures with a game-high 26 points.
 
Saturday's win pushes Vassar's winning to streak to five games and improves the Brewers to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in Liberty League contests. Union falls to 12-9 and 9-5 in conference play.
 
First Half
  • Union raced out to an 8-2 lead to start the contest with Jelena Perovic supplying six points over the run.
  • Vassar answered with a 14-4 run to close the opening period and carry a 16-12 lead into the second stanza.
  • Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) sparked the Vassar run with nine points, including the first five tallies of the spurt.
  • The Brewers expanded the run to 19-4 with five points from Gelb to open the second period scoring to make the score 21-12 with just over seven minutes left before halftime.
  • Union put together an 11-0 run, keyed by six points from Olivia Cunningham, to push back in front 25-23 with 1:59 remaining in the first half.
  • The two sides would trade the next three conversions, with Gelb sinking a layup in the final minute to send the Brewers into the break with a slim 27-26 lead.
  • Vassar would shoot just shy of 41-percent from the floor in the first half and hit on three triples.
  • Union shot 38.5-percent before halftime and went without a three-pointer in eight attempts.
Second Half
  • Union came out of halftime with a 9-2 run to jump back into the lead 35-29 on a Perovic bucket just over two minutes into the second half.
  • The advantage grew to double-figures when Jenna Forman converted a layup at the 5:17 mark of the third quarter to give the Garnet Chargers a 41-31 lead.
  • Union would maintain the lead until a Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) triple capped a 11-0 run for the Brewers and moved them back in front 42-41 with 1:45 left in the period.
  • Sophia Poplyk answered with a triple for Union before Gelb knocked down a trey with 1:18 left in the frame to give the Brewers a 45-44 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • Perovic gave Union a 48-45 lead with a jumper early in the fourth period.
  • Harvey would get Vassar back in front with a triple with 5:31 left in regulation time.
  • The Brewers hung on to the advantage until the 1:55 mark when a Perovic jumper gave the Garnet Chargers a 54-53 lead.
  • After a Gelb free-throw knotted the score at 54-54, Cunningham put Union back in front 56-54 with a bucket with 1:13 left in the fourth.
  • Vassar drew even in the final minute on a McDermed conversion.
  • The Brewers would have a look in the closing seconds that would not go, sending the game to the extra session.
  • The Brewers shot just 30-percent in the final two periods of regulation, but hit on four three-pointers and seven free-throws.
  • Union shot 48.1-percent over the third and fourth quarters hitting on just two triples and a pair of free-throws.
 
Overtime
  • Vassar outscored Union 10-7 in the overtime period, going 3-for-7 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
  • Union converted on two of its seven field goal attempts, including a three-pointer, and went 2-for-4 from the stripe.
  • Vassar scored the first four points of the overtime period, all from Gelb, and did not trail in the extra frame.
  • The lead grew to 64-58 on a pair of Harvey free-throws with 2:26 left to play.
  • Union would get to within the final 66-63 decision with 32 seconds left and had a look to tie from Forman in the closing seconds miss.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb led all players in scoring after going 10-for-20 from the floor with a pair of triples. Gelb rounded out a double-double with 14 rebounds and added four assists and five steals.
  • Harvey tallied 20 points on the strength of a perfect 8-for-8 effort from the free-throw line and totaled four rebounds and a trio of thefts.
  • McDermed reached double-figures with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.
 
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Perovic led the way with 14 points and collected three rebounds.
  • Forman posted 13 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three blocks.
  • Cunningham came off the bench to supply 10 points and five caroms.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game shooting 35.9-percent overall and connected on seven three-pointers.
  • Union converted at 41.7-percent but went just 3-for-17 from behind the arc.
  • Vassar went 13-for-17 from the free-throw line.
  • Union misfired on seven free-throws, going 10-for-17 from the stripe.
  • Union outscored Vassar 40-28 in the paint.
  • The Brewers finished with a 12-7 edge in fast break points.

  • Vassar makes the trip to RIT on February 14.
  • Union heads to Clarkson on Friday.
