Brewers Pull Away For Sixth Straight Victory

McDermed closes in on 1,000 career points

Rochester, NY – Junior Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) led three players in double-figures with a game-high 22 points on Friday as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team outscored RIT 43-25 in the second half on its way to an impressive 73-48 victory over the Tigers, the team's sixth straight triumph.
 
Friday's win moves Vassar to 17-5 overall on the season and 13-2 against conference opponents, while RIT falls to 12-10 overall and 10-5 in conference play.
 
First Half
  • Following a sluggish start, Vassar used an 11-4 run to close the first quarter and open a 17-10 lead through 10 minutes of play.
  • A Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) layup gave the Brewers the lead for good in the game with 3:02 left in the opening stanza.
  • After RITclosed to within 12-10, the Brewers got a Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) conversion and a deep three-pointer from Tash Thompson (Los Altos Hills, CA) at the horn to open the seven-point lead.
  • Vassar pushed its lead to double-figures for the first time on a Harvey free-throw early in the second period.
  • RIT cut its disadvantage to four points midway through the second quarter and climbed to within 24-23 on a Hannah Durand bucket with 2:13 left before halftime.
  • The Brewers responded with the final six points of the half, including four from McDermed, to spread its lead to 30-23 at the break.
  • The Brewers finished the first half shooting 39.3-percent overall and went just one for seven from behind the arc.
  • RIT was held to 32.1-percent shooting in the first half and also struggled from bonus distance, going 0-for-9 prior to halftime.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 21-10 and shooting an even 50-percent from the floor.
  • The Brewers extended their 6-0 run to end the second period to 14-0 with the first eight points coming out of halftime.
  • A Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) lay-in just over two minutes into the third period pushed Vassar in front 38-23.
  • The Brewers' lead grew to 47-30 on a Harvey bucket with 3:46 left in the quarter and a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) conversion in the closing seconds sent Vassar into the final stanza leading 51-33.
  • An Ahearn triple pushed Vassar's lead to 54-33 early in the fourth quarter and the Brewers would not let the Tigers closer than 15 points the rest of the evening.
  • The advantage ballooned to a game-high 25 points when McDermed knocked down a three-pointer with 1:25 left to give the Brewers the final 73-48 decision.
  • Vassar converted at an efficient 51.6-percent clip after halftime and went 4-for-10 from three-point range.
  • RIT shot 35.7-percent in the second half and went 3-for-10 from behind the arc after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • McDermed led all scorers with 22 points, going 8-for-14 from the floor, with a pair of three-pointers, while adding three assists and three steals.
  • With Friday's scoring output, McDermed stands just five points shy of becoming the third Brewer to reach 1,000 career points this season.
  • Gelb went 7-for-11 from the floor and finished with 19 points while adding eight rebounds, three assists and wo steals.
  • Harvey tallied 15 points for Vassar and hauled in seven rebounds.
  • Ahearn scored seven points off the bench and swiped three steals.
 
For The Tigers
  • Caroline Henderson led the way with 12 points to go along with two assists and two steals.
  • Ben Kayser—Cochran came off the bench to score 11 points and lead the team with seven rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the night shooting 45.8-percent overall and went 5-for-17 from three-point range.
  • RIT converted at 33.9-percent overall and connected on just three of its 19 three-point attempts.
  • The Brewers shot 93.3-percent from the free-throw line, going 14-for-15 in the contest.
  • The Vassar defense forced 18 turnovers, leading to a 20-9 edge in points off of miscues.
  • The Brewers dominated the paint, outscoring RIT 42-28 inside.
  • Vassar controlled the transition game with a 19-4 edge in fast break points.

  • Vassar plays its final regular season road game on Saturday when it visits RPI.
