Vassar Stifles Bard, 68-30

Ippolito nets career-high in victory

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – Sophomore Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) scored a career-high 14 points and senior Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) led all players with 19 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team posted its fourth straight victory with a 68-30 road win at Bard.
 
Vassar improves to 15-5 overall on the season and 11-2 in Liberty League play, while Bard drops to 2-18 overall and 0-13 in conference competition.
 
First Half
  • After Bard grabbed an early 3-2 lead, Vassar ripped off 16 straight points to surge in front 18-3 on a Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) layup with 2:38 left in the first period.
  • A pair of Harvey free-throws in the closing seconds of the quarter gave Vassar a 22-7 led through 10 minutes of play.
  • The Brewers shot just shy of 47-percent from the field in the opening frame and held Bard to just 2-for-13 shooting from the field.
  • The two teams went scoreless for the first 2:15 of the second frame before an Erin Tobes three-point play sliced the Bard deficit to 22-10.
  • Vassar answered with an 11-2 spurt, capped by an Ippolito triple, that gave Vassar a 33-12 lead with 1:23 left before halftime.
  • The Brewers carried a 33-14 advantage into the intermission after shooting 37-percent overall, including a 4-for-11 effort from three-point range in the first half.
  • The Raptors were held to 20.8-percent shooting over the opening 20 minutes and finished the first half 1-for-4 from three-point range.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar did not let Bard closer than 17 points in the second half and opened a 41-16 lead on a Harvey three-pointer early in the third frame.
  • The advantage grew to 49-17 on an Ippolito layup in transition with 2:09 left in the third period.
  • Vassar went into the final stanza leading 50-21 following a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) jumper with 63 seconds left in the third quarter.
  • Harvey opened the fourth quarter scoring with a three-pointer, pushing the lead to 54-20.
  • The lead ballooned to a game-high 39 points, at 66-27, on another Ippolito triple with 3:02 left in the contest.
  • Vassar took the final 68-30 advantage in the final minute when Maddie Hooper (Greenwich, CT) converted a layup with 37 seconds left to play.
  • The Brewers finished the second half shooting 43.3-percent overall and went 5-for-11 from behind the arc.
  • Bard converted at just 26.1-percent after halftime and made one of its nine three-point attempts.
 
For The Brewers
  • Ippolito reached double-figures for the second time this season and reached a career-high point total on 4-for-5 shooting, including two three-pointers, and a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the free-throw line. Ippolito added a pair of rebounds and four steals in the victory.
  • Harvey finished the contest 5-for-8 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, and totaled four rebounds and three thefts.
  • Gelb scored nine points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds. Gelb closed a strong all-around game with three assists, three blocked shots and four steals.
  • Sierra McDermed handed out a game-high seven assists and chipped in five points and a pair of steals.
  • Regan scored seven points for the Brewers and swiped two steals.
  • Hooper tallied six points and handed out an assist.
 
For The Raptors
  • Tobes led the team with eight points and collected four rebounds.
  • Aislynn Dixon finished with a team-high five rebounds.
  • Tianna Gonzalez scored six points and finished with a pair of steals.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 40.4-percent from the field for the game and knocked down nine three-pointers.
  • Bard converted at 23.4-percent overall and connected on just two of its 13 three-point attempts.
  • Vassar closed the evening a perfect 13-for-13 from the free-throw line.
  • The Vassar defense forced 30 turnovers leading to a 21-7 edge in points off of miscues.
  • The Brewers held a 22-18 edge in points in the paint.
  • Keyed by Ippolito's 14 points, the Vassar bench outscored Bard's 27-10.
