Brewers Drop Overtime Heartbreaker To Ithaca On Senior Day

Trio nets 20 points

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 78-74 overtime loss to visiting Ithaca on Senior Day. Prior to the contest, the Brewers recognized seniors Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA), Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY), Ashley Mostrom (Germantown, MD) and Tash Thompson (Loas Altos Hills, CA).
 
Vassar secures the two-seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championship and closes the regular season at 19-6 overall and 15-3 in Liberty League play. Ithaca claims the top seed and improves to 18-7 overall and 17-1 in conference play.
 
First Half
  • Ithaca took advantage of a sluggish start from the Brewers and opened a quick 6-0 lead.
  • The Bombers pushed their advantage to double-figures late in the first quarter when an Anya Watkins bucket pushed the lead to 18-8.
  • Vassar got a pair of Gelb free-throws and a conversion from Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) to close the quarter and pull to within 18-12 through 10 minutes of play.
  • The Brewers would climb to within 20-16 midway through the second stanza before taking their first lead of the contest late in the frame.
  • Vassar used an 8-0 run, highlighted by four points from Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX), to surge in front 30-27 in the final minute of the first half.
  • Tori Drevna sent the two teams to the intermission knotted at 30-30 with a triple in the closing seconds for the Bombers.
  • Vassar finished the first half shooting 48-percent overall, but went without a three-pointer in four attempts.
  • Ithaca converted at 36.1-percent overall and made a trio of three-pointers.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar started the third period on a 14-6 run that was keyed by back-to-back three-pointers from Gelb and Harvey.
  • Gelb capped the run with a bucket that gave the Brewers a 44-36 lead with 5:55 left in the frame.
  • Ithaca rallied to within a point on a Zoraida Icabalceta jumper with 17 seconds left, but Harvey answered with another triple to give Vassar a 53-49 lead through three quarters.
  • Vassar held a lead as large as six points in the final period, moving in front 55-49 on a McDermed conversion in the early going.
  • Ithaca would pull to within a point twice, before taking a 59-58 lead on a Junie Dickson layup.
  • After falling behind 61-58, Vassar scored seven straight points, capped by a Thompson triple to pull back in front 65-61.
  • Drevna struck again with another three with 60 seconds left to push the Bombers back in front 66-65.
  • The Brewers went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to pull in front 69-66 with six seconds left.
  • In the final possession, Ithaca's Icabalceta was fouled in the closing seconds on a three-pointer and converted all three free-throws to send the game to overtime.
  • Vassar shot 41.9-percent in the third and fourth periods and knocked down six three-pointers.
  • Ithaca shot 40.5-percent over the final two frames of regulation and connected on six triples.
 
Overtime
  • In the overtime periods, Vassar went just 1-for-6 from the floor with Ithaca converting at a 3-for-9 clip.
  • Ithaca never trailed in the extra frame and moved in front by as many as five points on a Watkins layup with 2:07 left to play.
  • Vassar would have two looks from three-point range trailing by three, but could not get one to fall.
  • A Watkins free-throw in the final seconds gave the Bombers the final four-point decision.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb finished the contest with 22 points, going 8-for-18 from the floor. Gelb finished with a team-high 12 rebounds while adding four assists and four steals.
  • McDermed also netted 22 points on 8-for-18 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and a team-high five assists.
  • Harvey connected on four three-pointers on the way to 20 points, adding a trio of steals.
  • Thompson tallied seven points and collected five rebounds.
 
For The Bombers
  • Icabalceta led the way with 21 points, going 7-for-13 from the floor, while adding five assists.
  • Watkins poured in 20 points and led all players with 16 rebounds.
  • Emma Waite tallied 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
  • Drevna came off the bench to score 15 points, knocking down five triples.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the day shooting 41.9-percent overall and connected on six three-pointers.
  • Ithaca converted at 37.8-percent, but made five more field goals, and hit on nine three-pointers.
  • Ithaca secured 21 offensive rebounds and produced a 21-5 edge in second chance scoring.
  • Points in the paint were even at 40-40.
  • Ithaca's bench outscored Vassar's 21-3.
 
What's Next
  • Both teams will be in action at home in the Semifinal Round of the Liberty League Championship on Friday.
