Vassar Pulls Away From Skidmore, Advances To Second Straight Liberty League Title Game

Gelb posts double-double, Harvey totals 20 points

Poughkeepsie, NY – Seniors Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) and Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) combined for 45 points and junior Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) chipped in 13 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team clinched a berth into the Liberty League Championship Final with a 67-51 semifinal victory over Skidmore Friday evening.
 
Friday's victory gives Vassar 20 wins on the season and six straight victories over the Thoroughbreds. Vassar heads to Ithaca with the conference crown on the line Sunday at a time to be announced.
 
First Half
  • Vassar jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead on a Harvey triple 1:59 into the contest.
  • The Brewers spread their lead to 14-7 on a McDermed trey with 3:55 left in the opening stanza.
  • Following the McDermed three-pointer, Skidmore scored the final six points of the period to slice the Vassar advantage to 14-13 through 10 minutes of play.  
  • Skidmore improved their run to 13-0 to start the second frame and moved in front 20-14 on a Sophia Martinez bucket with 7:40 left before halftime.
  • Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) converted a layup to knot the score at 22-22, but Vassar would not hold the lead again in the first half.
  • The Thoroughbreds surged back in front 28-22 on a Rebecca Horger bucket with 1:14 left before halftime.
  • Vassar closed the half with buckets from Harvey and Gelb to cut the deficit to 28-26 heading into halftime.
  • Vassar was held to 31.3-percent shooting in the first half and a 2-for-13 effort from three-point range.
  • Skidmore converted at 41.4-percent and went 1-for-5 from behind the arc.
  • Gelb led the Vassar scoring attack with nine first half points.
  • Martinez came off the bench to pace Skidmore with seven first half tallies.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar came out of the break and outscored Skidmore 20-11.
  • A Harvey three-pointer pushed Vassar back in front 33-32 and gave the Brewers the lead for good in the game.
  • The Brewers pushed the advantage to 44-38 on a McDermed triple late in the third frame before taking a 46-39 lead into the fourth on a Gelb layup with 15 seconds left in the quarter.
  • Harvey opened the fourth quarter scoring with a three and pushed the Brewers lead to double-figures for the first time at 49-39.
  • A Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) triple pushed the lead to 54-41 with 8:27 left to play.
  • The Brewers' lead surged to 63-45 on a pair of Gelb free-throws with 3:43 left to play.
  • Skidmore would not pull closer than 13 points the rest of the way before taking the final 16-point decision.
  • Vassar shot 51.6-percent in the second half and canned five three-pointers.
  • Skidmore shot 32.1-percent in the second half and went 0-for-5 from three-point range.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb led all scorers with 25 points after going 9-for-17 from the field. Gelb secured a game-high 13 rebounds and added three assists, a block and a steal.
  • Harvey finished with 20 points, connecting on a trio of three-pointers, and chipped in five rebounds and two assists.
  • McDermed tallied 13 points and closed a strong night with nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.
  • Lovett secured six rebounds and blocked a shot.
  • Ahearn totaled five points and three assists.
 
For Skidmore
  • Sarah Chambers led Skidmore with 10 points to go along with five rebounds.
  • Cassie Davidson and Martinez each scored eight points.
  • Claudia Schneider grabbed seven rebounds and chipped in six points.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the night shooting 41.3-percent and connected on seven three-pointers.
  • Skidmore was held to 36.8-percent shooting and finished just 1-for-10 from behind the arc.
  • Vassar finished with a slim 12-9 edge in second chance scoring.
  • Points in the paint were even at 34-34.

  • Vassar heads to Ithaca on Sunday for the Championship Final at a time to be announced.
