Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season At Smith, MIT

Home opener set for March 22

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Tennis team kicks-off the 2025 spring season this weekend with road matches at Smith and MIT. Friday's match at Smith is set for 3:00 p.m. with Saturday's contest scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
 
Vassar At A Glance
  • The Brewers concluded the 2023-24 season with a 16-4 overall record and an unbeaten 8-0 mark against Liberty League rivals.
  • Vassar earned the top seed in the 2024 Liberty League Championship and advanced to the Final, falling to Skidmore in a tight 5-3 decision.
  • Erin McCusker (Norton, MA) had a standout season for the Brewers, earning a berth into the NCAA Division III Individual Championship in St. Louis, MO.
  • The Brewers posted an impressive 83-25 record in singles matches, including a 31-4 mark in conference contests.
  • In doubles play, Vassar recorded a 41-15 record and a 14-3 mark in league competition.
 
Returners
  • McCusker headlines a talented group of returners for the Brewers after posting a 15-4 mark in dual meet matches a season ago, playing at the top flight. McCusker added 11 doubles wins at the top flight on her way to being named First Team All-Conference in both singles and doubles and the Liberty League Player of the Year.
  • Macey Dowd (Orinda, CA) was also named First Team All-League in both singles and doubles a season ago after posting a 14-4 singles record at second singles and teaming with McCusker for 11 triumphs at the top doubles flight.
  • Iris Li (Palo Alto, CA) is coming off a 2023-24 season that ended with a Liberty League Honorable Mention citation after going 12-4 at third singles and adding 13 wins in doubles play.
  • Ananya Krishnan (Chesterbrook, PA) posted a stellar 16-2 record playing at three different singles positions, including an unblemished 9-0 mark at the third slot. Krishnan also teamed with Elyse Duley (Charlotte, NC) 16-2 mark in doubles competition.
  • In addition to the 16 wins in doubles play, Duley racked up 11 singles victories, including 10 at the sixth position, a season ago.
  • Sophomore Maddie Kirby (Davidson, NC) put together a strong rookie season in 2023-24, compiling a 12-6 singles record while joining Li at the second doubles slot for 13 more victories.
  • Sophomore Sara Lippin (Chappaqua, NY) posted a 1-0 record in singles play as a rookie of the Brewers.
  • Esme Nix (Altadena, CA) won two of the three singles matches contested as a rookie and teamed with Lippin for a win in doubles play.
  • Sofie Shen (New York, NY) is set to return to the Vassar lineup after being named First Team All-Conference in doubles in 2022-23 and advancing to the ITA Cup in doubles play teamed with McCusker last fall.
 
Newcomers
  • Sieun Lee (Wake Forest, NC) put together a strong 2024 fall season, going 3-2 in singles play and adding three more victories in doubles competition.
  • Liya Pomfret (Berkeley, CA) will also look to crack the Vassar lineup in the spring, after posting a singles win and a pair of doubles victories during the fall.
 
The Schedule
  • Vassar will play its first eight matches of the spring away from home.
  • Following this weekend's matches, the Brewers will travel to Williams before heading to California to play five matches over Spring Break.
  • Vassar opens the home schedule against league rival William Smith on March 22.
  • The Brewers will also play host to Bates, Ithaca, RIT, RPI and Hamilton during the spring campaign.
  • Road matches include visits to St. Lawrence, Skidmore, Union and Bard.
